First AK, WASR-10/63
« on: April 03, 2011, 02:36:53 PM »
I've been watching WASRs for several years now. A couple of months ago, I stopped by Cabela's on the way home from a long work trip, and there she was. I finally found the tightest, straightest WASR I've ever seen, so I bought it on the spot. All numbers matching except for dust cover, 1978 Cugir build, rifle passed through Century on January 2011 - I must have bought it right after it shipped. Not a single piece on this rifle rattles or shakes, mag wobble is virtually nonexistant with both included mags. It shot straight right out of the box, though I have not benched it yet, so the sights may require fine adjustment to shoot out past 100yds.

If this is how WASRs are made these days, Century must have stepped up their game. I'm glad I waited.

My only complaints was that it had a welded muzzle nut (removed, now has Tapco slant), and the finish is thin around the magwell. Bayo lugs are also ground, but I don't care; I have plenty of rifles to attach bayonets to. I bought this WASR as an introduction to AKs and as a project gun. If I have to duracoat it later on, that's part of the fun, or I can just let the finish wear away like most authentic Romanians have.

The wood was also standard WASR fare - prime for a refinish, but I didn't care for the laminated LHG with no palmswell. I bought two sets of Bulgarian AK-74 wood from APEX, stripped and refinished the better set in BLO, hand rubbed without buffing to keep the gloss down. Wood is very smooth yet grippy in this way.

The Bulgarian wood from APEX is excellent quality, I would recommend that you guys get a set while they're still around. I wouldn't have known that it was used if it weren't for the flaking poly finish that they came with. Compared to the Romanian wood, this set is much meatier, giving the rifle some extra weight in the buttstock and extra cheekweld material. The ribbed buttplate is also much more comfortable.

The sling is Polish nylon. Adjusts very smoothly, and the leather loop strap matches the Bulgarian pistol grip.

I'm very happy with this WASR. The only thing I really want to add to it now is a 4x POSP.

Last but not least, my little helper. Each time a new coat of BLO had to be rubbed in, she followed me to the basement and would watch for the entire half hour it took to rub in and wipe a fresh coat.

Looks nice.  I'm in the market for my first AK also.  What's Cabela's selling them these days?

List was $499, I got them to drop it to $475 just because the counter guy is someone who I've bought from a couple times before - they know I'll come back. This was just days after Century hiked their dealer pricing up to $425, so considering that, the fact that the kit was matching, and the tight build quality, it wasn't too bad of a deal. Could have paid less online, but I wasn't willing to buy a WASR sight unseen.

If anyone goes into Cabela's in Lacey, WA, see Pat at the gun counter. Great guy. He didn't moan one bit when I stood there inspecting the WASR for probably close to 20 minutes.

Still regret not buying a WASR-3 they had on the used rack for $300 last year.

Nice looking WASR, i bought mine about three months ago, i bought it used for 360. dollars and i replaced the stock furnature with a set of original Romanian furnature, added a slant brake, a bayonet, and a PSO-1 4x24 scope.

Picked up a pack of 3 Hungarian 20s and an AMD-65 brake. The mag deal at Centerfire for 3 20-rd mags and a pouch was still up, so I grabbed those, the brake, a Romanian 2x30 pouch, and a cleaning rod.

Not much to say about the pouches other than that they're in good shape, but musty.

The mags were clean and look lightly used, with a tiny bit of surface rust. Fit and function on each is great, no wobble and they snap in tight. I like the 20 rounders a lot, and since all 7.62x39 seems to be sold in counts of 20, it's more convenient to load. Or is it? I don't know, I just like them!

The brake is fun and makes a nice gas blast out both sides that you can really feel. A silicone O-ring was needed to get it seated tight. I don't know if it'll stay on the rifle, it just sort of looks out of place. Would like to try the fake AK-74 brake next. Having fun playing with all of the cheap AK parts that are available to order everywhere.

I also ordered a Bulgarian AK-74 plum set from APEX, which arrived in good shape, but was just not what I expected. It's definitely real Soviet-style plum; very dark, almost black, and with fiber flecks visible throughout the material. It just didn't look right on a WASR. I'll eventually have an AK-74 of some type, so I'll save it for that.

Hopefully someone is reading this. I was thinking about doing white lettering on the trunnion stampings. Was this ever done on any AK from the factory?

Thanks.

Trying out Tapco AK-74 brake, and with Romanian bakelite grip. Working on finishing a second set of Bulgarian '74 wood in sedona red.

Thanks. The Bulgarian '74 wood has perfect LOP, gives good balance weight, has beautiful grain (both sets I have are pretty), and perfect size for cheek weld. Even though I like to keep things sort of authentic, If I buy another Romanian AK, the wood is the first thing to come off.
