AR Flip-up Front Sight?
« on: January 28, 2012, 12:29:03 PM »
I am looking for a flip up front sight for my latest AR15 upper.  It will have to be a rail mounted version.  For this part I want to go metal instead of the less expensive polymer - so those Magpul and other BUIS are out.  It will be mated with the A.R.M.S. 40L flip up rear I already have.  Primary sight will be a EOTech.

Just browsing around I have seen the following sights available and was wondering if anybody has any feedback on any of them.  If you have experience with more than one of them that would be better or has better, or easier to use features or sight picture.  Or if there is another that I have missed that would be good, please let me know.  Basically I want the usual M4/M16 sight picture.

Midwest Industries flip front sight MCTAR for rail mount (I can get this one for $65).

GG&G Spring Actuated Flip Up Front Sight for tactical forearms (#GGG-1393).

BCM or Troy Industries Rail Mounted Folding Battle Sight - A4 Front (manufactured by Troy Industries for Bravo Company)

If there are guns in the room - one of them had better belong to you!

Try Magpul or Yankee Hill for high quality. you can even buy plastic sets for around about 50.00 a set , look around and there are numerous options.

Seems like the MI MCTAR-FFR for that money is the best deal. I prefer the HK style semi hood, and I like my BUIS to lock solid in the up position over a detent or spring.   YHM has one similar, but I doubt its any cheaper.

If you want the standard AR front sight picture, YHM has them, and can be had for $63 shipped from Bright flashlights on arfcom, or Benny I bet can maybe get one for you as well if you ask him.

Of the ones you listed, I'd go with the Midwest Industries ones.
I had the Troy sights, they were very nice with a solid lock up and are extremely durable, but as BUIS that aren't going to war I'd save a few nickles and get the Midwest.

If you do get the Troy sights, get the ones from Noveske, you'll have a cool little roll mark on them.  :)

I had a barrel mounted YHM front sight and it was fine. I would assume the rail mounted ones would be also. I personally don't like the big knob on the side of them and prefer a more streamline look but that's just me.
I've had a only a little experience with the Troy sights, they are nice and it seems that no one ever has any complaints about them other than the price.

I know these are not a folding sight but for a red dot type optic I hear these work great. And they're cheaper.  8)

Here are a few folding options not yet mentioned.

For an EOTech I prefer fixed sights, just an opinion, but it's worth a look if you haven't. Out of the ones you listed I have tried the MI and Troy. I find that there is no advantage to spending $30 more for the Troy rail mounted flip up. They both lock up solid and do their job as intended.

My latest build has a Daniel Defense fixed front and rear with an Aimpoint T-1 mounted as far forward on the receiver as it can go. I like it over any other optic/iron setup that I have so far. This last USPSA Multi-Gun I placed 1st in Limited Division with that combo.

My current SHTF upper has the A2 fixed sight and the EOTech co-witnessed, but I just can't get used to having the front sight in the FOV so prominently all the time in my primary sight.  Maybe it is because I'm so used to scopes.  So that is one of the things that I wanted to change with the new replacement upper build.  So because of this madness, I am going to try the folding front - but I appreciate your input.
