Advice on removing the FP retaining pin

(1/3) > >>

murray:
Lots of folks talk about that "Big" hammer. It's not necessary. The real key to getting that retaining pin to start moving is to have a solid, firm base. The pics are what I use every day, (along with a 6 oz. ball peen) but you don't have to buy or manufacture something like this, there are other alternatives.
One guy told of balancing his bolt on a 3/4" socket on a concrete floor. (Not bad!)
Others mention either clamping the bolt in a vise, with protective pads, of course, or laying the bolt across the jaws of the vise with them opened just enough for the RP to fall out. (again, not bad)
As you'll notice, my support fixture is not under the front "larger" portion of the extractor. Support starts just behind that and does not go far enough back to be under the "larger" rear portion of the bolt body. If your support is under the full length of the bolt, you'll get a flexing effect and it will make it harder to get the RP started out.
The "cutout" area of my fixture is just an easier way for me to locate bolt properly so RP is over hole.

You can start with a 5/32" punch, but BE SURE you drop down to a 1/8" punch (holding it to the upward side of hole) or you'll drive the 5/32" into the FP and get them both jammed up.

Good luck!

I'm a happy customer of yours.

hmmm, i will have to try the socket idea. the one on my m59 came out no problem on my wood sawhorse (with a hole drilled through it, for the FP retaining pin to fall). but the new m59/66 i got is giving me a serious problem. I've been working on it off and on for days! I've even used liquid wrench to try and get to come out!

galahad:
I agree absolutely on the firm base.  I use two full ammo cans on a concrete floor and span the bolt between them, leaving about 1/2 inch between the cans.  That works well almost all the time but every once in a while one of the pins does require a BIG hammer and STEEL drift.

Kivaari:
I use a fuel injected, turbo charged starter punch..then switch to a normally aspirated 3/32..

Ben's Pins are awesome...
