Unusual serial number stock and handguard marking
« on: February 20, 2026, 04:10:15 PM »
I bought a Russian stock with a matching handguard and noticed an unusual serial number marking.
Are there any ideas about what I bought?

In the olden days the rifles with a horizontal numbered HGs were misidentified as a DDR refurb, German. I forget what the actual arsenal name is. PAX

This stock also came with a highly polished bayonet blade.

Also, if I'm remembering it halfway right, the rifles were only Izhevsk "DDR" refurbs, a lot of them were in new laminate furniture. Mine is anyway. PAX

I think you may be referring to the Izmash /1\ refurbishing plant Wayne. I'm not up on the Russians like I am with the Chinese, but hopefully someone else will chime in shortly.

I believe that's the one. It's been a while since I've seen the thread questioning the "DDR" claim (20 years?). I seem to recall that many of the Izmash refurbs were Izzys, with many only having new laminate furniture swapped out and fresh numbers stamped on the stocks and HGs horizontally, which was a trademark and readily distinguished the arsenal. Nice chunk of wood Ed. PAX

Here is Google AI's information on DDR SKS, or Karabiner-S.

Markings: The receivers typically feature a two-digit year of manufacture followed by a letter prefix (documented letters include A, E, F, L, N, and U) and a four-digit serial number. Rear sights are often marked with the letters "SV."
Stock Material: They were typically issued with laminated wood stocks.
I'm not sure if this stock is connected to the DDR.

They weren't east German rifles. They were allegedly refurbed in east Germany, which I believe was disproven. Anyway the "DDR" connection was false or incorrect in some manner. PAX

I found another example of horizontal serial number marking online.
The original serial number is obscured by XXXXXX, and the new 4-digit number is added following the refurbishment process.
The location of the refurbishment is unknown.
