A mechanically injected diesel is even better.  If you have a manual trans and a hill, you don't even need a starter or battery.  In terms of fullsize pickup trucks, you're looking at fords with the 6.9 or 7.3 NONpowerstroke diesel, a chevy with a 6.2 or 6.5 diesel up to some point at which they got electronic control (I don't remember exactly which year), and a dodge with a 5.9 cummins up to early 1998 model year.  The glowplug controller could get fried on the gm or ford, though you could rig up a switch to activate the glowplugs if you had a good battery or other source of 12v.  Same thing on the grid heater on the dodges.  Barring that, in cold weather find a way to keep the engine warm.

If a solar flare from the sun burnt telegraph wires and tappers to the point they caught fire in the 1800s then you can be sure that todays fragile electronics will fry from a strong enough EMP.

Telegraph wires, or any other extremely long run of wire make excellent traps for inducing currents from solar electromagnetic discharges, shorter runs of wire, as would be found in a car, cellphone, iPad, whatever don't exhibit this effect. Really not the same thing as an emp..

My question is if most cars, even modern cars are immune to EMP weapons, than why are police throughout the US arming themselves with EMP style devices to knock out vehicles??

Episodes I've watched, when the manufactueres of these devices are showing them in use, claim no vehicle is immune to these devices....And they mention they are minuture directional EMP devices....

Those that think modern cars won't be effected by them, are in for a rude awakening..

Even if your vehicle is running, you still need fuel....

Older military and some civilian diesels can run on motor oil, Trans fluid and a few other liquids that will explode under compression.

M35A2 with add on air start option seems like a good bet.

I know this is an old topic.... but if an EMP were to happen. It might jusy be smarter not to have a vehicle...??? Mixed emotions on this one. If people see you drive by in a working vehical your gonna have an "angry mob" chasing you and will prolly be a huge bullet magnet. Lots of people would do some very bad things to get ahold of a worjing car or truck in an EMP l. Just somethin to think about

I believe it would depend on where you live.  Here in the country there are a lot of old cars running around.  Then there are tractors, and 4 wheelers M/C etc.  I don't believe motorized transportation will be that scarce, at least not here.  The Key will be fuel.

In theory, an old microwave will act as a faraday cage. You can also make your own faraday cage using different metals. The first ones were created with foil. It may be difficult to stick a car in your microwave, but you could easily stick a radio and some other essentials in there.

I bought a galvanized garbage can at wally world, (it's actually made in the USA).  I lined it with cardboard.  Instant EMP protection.  Cost $19.95 for the can, the cardboard was free.  It's a 32 gallon can.  That will hold a lot of stuff.

I would be interested to see exactly how intense of an EMP a home-made Faraday cage could mitigate.  I have trouble believing that a steel garbage can could stop the pulse from a nuclear airburst, or an intense solar flare.

The thing is, nobody knows for sure. It's all theory based stuff. There have been so few tests done on it, and it was so long ago. The bigger problem comes with what we would put in the cage. Almost everything that is electronic depends on other electronic items. Cell phones require satellites and towers that would be sure to be down. Ham Radios would need to be batter powered. Even then, who would you communicate with?

So what would guys store in yours? I'd plan on flash lights and radios. I can't think of much else.

Laptop filled with adult entertainment media.  Joking, of course.

I'd certainly put a radio, flashlight, and a disk of non-volatile media (like a DVD) of important documents in the cage.  The DVD because even if the S does HTF, someday, things might get better.

I would, however, be prepared to live without any of those items.

Good point about the back up of media. Hard drives and such would be affected by an EMP, but DVDs would not.
