The original Farraday cage was made of copper screen.  I'm fairly sure my "garbage" can will do ok.  I pray that it is never tested.  I know it will be better than nothing.

A laptop that is loaded with important info would be a good candidate for the cage.  That is if you plan a way to recharge it.  LED flashlight's and lanterns are a must for the cage.

I'd avoid a laptop and do a tablet. Battery would last much longer and it's far more portable. Better yet, if its text you need, a kindle (black and white kind) would last almost a month on one charge.

Good idea.

The reason I suggest a laptop, is you can use it for DVDs and even bluray with the right drive.  Also with the right adapter you can pick up digital TV and or radio.

I know all electronic stuff dead.  Well maybe not.  Most weather radio stations are harden.  Also just because a circuit board is fried doesn't mean that a protected replacement isn't available.  Most military stuff is harden.  So some stuff will survive or be put back into service.

The sad part is "they" can harden the electrical grid, but BO and the progressive senate shot down the funding.

A laptop isn't a bad idea, but I wouldn't plan on getting any useful battery life with it.

There is all sorts of ways to power them. A portable "jump start" battery with built in inverter comes to mind.   Plus the batteries in the newer ones keep getting better.

Seems like a lot of work and resources for little reward, especially when preparedness could alleviate it. Again, I would recommend a tablet. Far far better battery life.

This is a great starter on preparing for EMP.  I highly recommend it. http://www.amazon.com/The-Preparedness-Podcast-Mini-Guide-ebook/dp/B009XG64LG/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1380564431&sr=8-3&keywords=emp+survival+guide

It dispels myths yet withholds none of the scary truth.  If you go to thepreparednesspodcast.com site you can order it in hard copy through a link there.

I can't remember who, but I think it was the University of Michigan who did an EMP experiment. They tested 30 vehicle. I think about 1 car was killed, but repairable, a few had minor issues like radio won't work, stuff like that. Most car electronics are already kinda hardened for EMF from the ignition system. I think most cars will survive, but fuel will be the issue. Either getting it pumped, or taken from you by gangs who see you have a running or non running vehicle. Will be a black market commodity. I have a couple bikes, not specifically for SHTF, but also have some car parts in mylar bags. Again not specifically for SHTF, but because my car is old and parts hard to get so I have spare ECUs, sensors, dashes, electronics. I drive for a living, so I also have a spare can of fuel on hand in case I start the day on E but get some freak blizzard. that way I pour it in and can idle for a while if stuck in traffic or snow. EMP effect is highly dependent on the blast proximity, and the reliability of a warhead. The NAVY can't catch everything, and all it takes is one rouge freighter carrying a shielded warhead, and mobile launcher disguised as something off the coast in international waters. I our Navy gets them all, but I can't have 100% faith in any government. Bikes are good, for mobility, reliability, etc. You lose some protection from people, even though a car door won't stop a bullet, it can stop a bat or sword, and prevent some robbery. I think the power grid and fires would be the bigger issues. I live in a agricultural county, so I hope we'd have a slight advantage, as far as supply an bartering. I hope it's something we never see. I think back in the day I could have survived it, but I've softened up and have kids with a large dependency on technology and convenience.

Well. A microwave oven, better with an earth ground but maybe not necessary, will work as a Faraday box. One should note that the billions of dollars spent on hardening electronic sites against EMP can be made useless just by pumping up the blast. Doing that is pretty cheap. Buy duplicate electronics for for your car and make an extended BOB.
