I suggest that y'all read the book "The Great Influenza", by John M. Barry.  It goes into great detail on the "Spanish flu" that occurred in the early 1900's.  It tells what people did wrong, and what they did right.

Also understand that modern medicine in leaps and bounds ahead of what it was back then.  The key is going to be preventing exposure, I.E. staying home.  Yes I know, that eventually you have to go around the public.  That's going to mean you need some sort of breathing protection, and just as importantly a way to decontaminate before you go back into your house.

One of the main ways people in rural areas were infected was by the U.S. Mail.

Again good book, well worth a read.

You have to go where the job are.  But it's very nice needing binoculars to see your neighbor house.

And pay no attention to all those dead pigs and ducks floating down rivers...

http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/headlines/2013/03/first-dead-pigs-now-dead-ducks-fowl-a-chinese-river/

In a country that doesn't have an overabundance of meat, I find it curious so much livestock was thrown away, from people that use very bit of the pig from snout to the last hair on the curly tail.  The numbers reported in the above article have since been revised upwards (16,000+).  I wonder how many pigs were buried or burned before the farmers finally felt so overwhelmed that they started dumping them in the river.  Again, from a people that waste nothing (and sell us their waste as drywall filler).

China has a "truthiness" problem compounded by a "closed news system" problem that makes containment an issue.  Containment is the best defense.  They're apparently shutting down some farmers markets, but the big cities downstream/wind continue to do worldwide commerce.

The thing that worries me most is the mortality rate of Avian Bird Flu. Most estimates have it somewhere in the 60%+ range with modern treatment. IIRC the Spanish Flu had a mortality rate of under 0.5% in the early 1900s. Not million, but billions of people could die.

where are you getting those statistics?  CDC said Spanish flu was 10-20 percent death rate.  0.5 percent wouldn't be remembered as the worldwide pandemic it was.

Quoting from memory when I had looked it up. I am incorrect. The below 0.5% was for H1N1 Swine Flu. My apologies. I would still make the point that even at 10-20% mortality with sub-par medical care vs 60%+ with modern care is a scary thing.
