Getting Barrel Out Of Stock - Stumped
« on: September 10, 2013, 06:11:31 PM »
 :banghead:

So I'm stripping down my recently-acquired SKS in order to clean out the cosmoline.  Bolt Housing, Trigger Group, Magazine, Gas Tube, Bayonet all removed and broken down - ready to clean.  But I can't get the barrel out of the doggone stock.  Checked and rechecked my steps.  Also tried some "hammer mechanics".  Still stuck.

It shouldn't be this hard.  I have to believe I'm missed a step.  Pictures attached.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

I think you're almost there, you just need a bit of persuasion to get it to come off.  When I've got a tough to pull stock, I'll insert a wooden dowel down onto the flat of the receiver just in front of the rear tang as shown here:

Then hold the stock near the back (rifle should be upside down, receiver should be around an inch in the air, muzzle resting on a cloth on top of a table or other hard surface), and give the dowel a few taps with a hammer to ease the receiver out.  It should pivot nicely about the front ferrule and come right off.  Stock always comes off by the rear of the receiver pivoting about the front, never try to lift the barrel out first.  Also, you've always got to make sure the bayonet (which it looks like you already have complely off) is not locked in the stored position as that could bind on the stock too.

Good luck!

Running-man is exactly correct.  I have had to use the method he describes several times, and it works great.
"Si vis pacem, para bellum"
"Fortis Fortuna Adiuvat"

Thanks Running-Man.  Got 'er done, thanks to your tip.  Dowel, padded vise grip, and several firm strikes with a 3-pound sledge.

Sure hope that barrel goes back in a bit easier...

I think you have the wrong stock.

Is your barrel pinned/pressed or screw in? Stock looks to be screw in, barrel looks pinned. This would cause a tight fit due to crossbolt not being spaced correct for the pinned barrel.

You can trim the crossbolt and wood to create a better fir or get a stock for a pinned barrel.

Thats exactly what I was thinking.  If someone canted the crossbolt in a pinned stock to allow for a screwed in barrel, it will hold extremely tight.  I wish I wasnt speaking from experience.

It may be an optical illusion but the crossbolt looks somewhat bent or flexed.

Beachbumwithagun:  Could very well be.  The barrel is definitely pinned.

Twig:  Looked close at the crossbolt and did not see a bend.  Might just be the iPhone camera I used for the pics.

Here's a pic showing the difference. Your rifle should be setup for a spike bayonet also.

Beachbumwithagun,  Huge help!  Thanks so much!

Seems I have a pinned barrel in a stock for a screw-in barrel.  Fortunately, it's set up for the bladed bayonet!

I've stripped down the stock and refinished the wood with Danish Oil Medium Walnut.  While the grain of the wood for this particular stock is nothing special, the Danish Oil helps.  Should be fun trying to get that barrel back into the stock ;)

Well, after spending some time cleaning and refinishing and attempting to reassemble....I've decided the stock is a POS.  Fiberglass core with wood finish, designed for a threaded rather than a pinned barrel.  Reassembly with this stock not possible with anything close to acceptable quality.  So, now a new question...

Any recommendations for a good stock?  Seen a few that look nice, but I'm not interested in a pistol grip stock.  Recommendations welcome.

  If you're wanting a basic, practical stock, the Choates are pretty solid;

If you want to go upscale, and get something that is absolutely beautiful, the Timbersmiths are unbelievably nice.....

This is what I hoped to find.  First tear down is commencing this weekend.  Since I just got both of my SKS's these last few weeks. And the receiver/barrel is being stubborn coming out of the stock. So I may have to try this method.
I did get lucky and got a few other stocks already as well. Mine is threaded barrel and spiked bayonet.  Stock looks correct compared to the photos posted here.  Appreciate the posted tips on removing it.
Yugo '74 was told, and '66 or '67 Chinese again was told upon purchase.
