Hi All,

I'm a brand new member here and first of all, have to say this is an impressive site with some real priceless info so thanks to all who have contributed and in doing so have helped me in identifying my SKS. With that being said, I'm now at a point where I could use some help!

I jumped on the same deal that this thread is following an purchased just one SKS although wish I could have bought more.. This is my first SKS and I find that researching all that I can about any new rifle is half of the fun of it. The other half is shooting it now that I've cleaned the cosmo off and that's the plan for tomorrow :)

Do you think some of you might perhaps be able to assist me in getting an idea of when this was built and anything else that might be interesting please? I can tell you that all the serial numbers on every part are matching including the serial number stamped in to the stock that I found was cracked but not so badly. The wood had a pretty well absorbed amount of cosmoline within it so I have stripped it with mineral spirits an given it a fresh coat of Shellac. I know some people frown upon this but I just couldn't have used it without getting covered in cosmo if I hadn't of so there we go.

Attached are some pictures. There are a few other markings but nothing obvious, no "26" as I'm reading some others are seeing or stars or trench art (unfortunately) but it is very clean and the bore is nice and bright.

If you could take a look and help me reveal some history on this I'd very much appreciate it!

Thanks in advance

Looks very nice! Good score. Lets see an up close of that last picture where all the marks are.

Definitely good advice from NVW there, it's customary to introduce yourself when you cone into someone else's house, especially before asking questions.

Having said that, I'd say you have a five digit ghost Chinese type 56, though we'll need a much clearer photo of the receiver to be 100% sure.  Take a look at this thread, it might help with some questions you might have: http://www.sksboards.com/smf/index.php?topic=121146.msg1433149

If you didn't "sweat out" the cosmo before you applied the shellac, it might cause a problem the first time you have the gun out on a really hot day.

Otherwise, you've got a great gun there. Enjoy it!

Again, apologies for the late post there, RTFM comes to mind! I'll know next time....

I've added some close ups as requested but the real problem is that there just aren't that many cartouches to show  you all.

Is there somewhere in particular I should look for specific marks?

A Ghost Chinese 56? Very mysterious. I'll check that post 'running-man'.

Thanks again guys.

running-man: Are the additional pictures I've uploaded of any help? I did follow your post but am not finding much on any SKS rifles with just 5 digit serial numbers with nothing preceding them.

UPDATE: Upon reading again I see that this is most likely a number three in your list of three Type 56 rifles, correct?

It's a fascinating rifle and am looking forward to getting it to the range for a good old warm up, the type of which it probably hasn't seen in a few decades!

dalaitom: I put the stock through the dishwasher after giving it a good soaking and scrubbing with mineral spirits. It was a risky maneuver, as far as my marriage goes, but it paid off well and nobody within the house is any the wiser!

From the photos I can see, very hard to make out a /26\ stamp or not. Take it out of the stock and check below the woodline. Sometimes they are struck very lightly. If it has no /26\ stamp, it's a ghost and #1 on the list of that link I posted. If it does have a /26\, with five digits, them you have a head scratcher. As far as I know, there have been no five digit + /26\ guns found in this IO batch. Come to think if it, I don't believe I've seen a five digit /26\ gun in the CAI batch either.

Enjoy shooting her, you have a fine carbine there.

RM is correct...  furthermore, /26\ marked rifles under 1mil serial can easily represent the missing 1957 rifles and "may" extend over 1m  but under 2mil, but the 1m rifles have yet to be seen (at least by me).

Dgb1000 rifle looks like a 5 digit ghost.

Well, I had a great day at the range today and the SKS functioned flawlessly. Together, my father-in-law and I must have gotten through around 200 rounds with not a single failure of any type. The ammunition was the same surplus steel cased variety I use in my other Russian rifles. I was also rather impressed with the accuracy where the rifle was consistently holding 5 shot groups within around 2 MOA at 100 yards.

Thanks again to RM, Mr Coinring and everybody else who has taken some time to help me dig up some history on this. I hope the info and pictures will help others get an idea of what they might expect when they buy a "gunsmith special" such as this. I still cannot seem to locate the 26 cartouche and am now a little confused as to what this means and how to date using the 5 digit serial number? What does this all mean and where do you think this rifle saw service if it did?

Thanks again to all of you and hope you had a Happy Thanksgiving.

Based on this guy's post from AKFiles (I take it he works at or with Royal Tiger / IO) another 500 will be available next week.

You're welcome, I was lucky to have been a guest here before I joined and seen where you could get chewed out for not posting an intro thread
