1951 hN 331 tula.
« on: December 31, 2013, 02:33:11 PM »
hello all, first timer on here. i have a 1951 tula sks with serial h (backwards N) 331. its all original minus stock and handguard wich i replaced with montecarlo stock 20 some years ago. i bought it before the original ban went up think late 80's. my questions after trying to make sence of 922 is this, id like to sporterize it more. as in replacing the montecarlo stock for maybe a tapco t6 stock and a removable mag. i also have a b square scope mount on it that goes over the rear case and is held in place by the main rear pin screw and 2 side pinch screws. im not interested in selling it since i pitched the original stock way back in the day unless someone offered a stupid amount of money. this is my deer hunting rifle i love it. accurate as hell. i live in michigan. im just trying to shed some weight off of it since the monte casrlo stock is heavier than the gun itself, (its glasslined fiberglass from ati or something like that) i forget since its been 20 some years ago since i did it. so am i safe to put tapco t6 stock, 5 rd removable mag and keep scope mount on it? im confused as to weither i have to keep the part counts  or if i dont. it has the bayonet lugs on barrel (yes i still have bayonet just dont use it)*edit i would post some pics of it if i can figure out how, the help section isnt helping* so might be awhile

As soon as you add any of the 9 forbidden "military features" to an imported, centerfire, semi auto rifle, it becomes subject to 922(r) regs.
i.e : ability to accept a detachable magazine, folding/telescoping stocks, separate pistol grips,
ability to accept a bayonet, flash suppressors, bipods, grenade launchers, and night sights.
And of coarse they added LCMM's (large cap mags in 1998).

Your Russian SKS was imported under the umbrella of C&R status,
once you take it out of that original military configuration,
it is the same as any other imported semi auto centerfire.
Doesn't matter when it was purchased.

The Monte Carlo stock and factory fixed mag and no bayonet was not a problem.
But the Tapco folding/collapsing stock with a pistol grip would then require you to
play the "10 or less game".

The Tapco stock & hand guard would take care of 2 of your US made replacement parts and Tapco mags (body & follower) would be 2 more, so with a Russian SKS that should put you right at 10 parts. You can double check that in the 10 or less spread sheet but I'm pretty sure a Russian only has 14 foreign parts.

so if i kept the factory mag and just found  a lighter non movable stock i wouldnt have to worry about the 922 then? the factory mag doesnt bother me, my main complain is just the stock. that puppys gotta weigh 8 lbs by itself. so any stock that has a pistol grip regardless if its adjustable/folding puts me into the 922 catagory then correct? any stock recomendations for it that keep me out of that law asides from original or montecarlo style? and appreciate the feedback. thanks

Your post incited me to start a "what does your stock weigh" thread:  http://www.sksboards.com/smf/index.php?topic=126683.0.

If your going for the lightest, either the Choate or the Ramline Monte Carlo stock look to weigh in at half of the ATI version (that about 1 1/2 pounds).
