The answers to this are so situational and subjective, but it is a fun mental exercise. I have always liked the idea of something underground. My old plan was good, but now I have moved and that area is not easily accessible. I live up in NW Montana, so I think that we should have a decent amount of forewarning and we are far away from major population bases.
The primary concern here is the climate. You would need a real shelter and means of heat to even have a shot at surviving the winters. Our ultimate goal is to own property a ways out of town. That would give us a home base and then we can create a more secretive shelter on the property that is not easily found. At that point the house would become a decoy and the hide would be the primary residence.
I think the main issue is remaining unseen, secure, fed, warm, and sanitary. Honestly, after the initial excitement it would be flat boring to live like this, but alive is alive I reckon.
