Other than eating, fishing and shooting - What is there to do on the Outer Banks?  I am planning a visit and would like some advise from others who have vacationed there. Thanks Y,all

What else do you need?

Visit the Wright Brothers museum at Kill Devil Hills.

...wear Columbia and North Face parkas. Walk around and act pretentious. Make sure you purchase an OBX sticker for the back of your SUV or crossover. Double the upper middle class suburbanite weekend warrior points if you hang the OBX sticker on the back of 4door jeep.

But seriously, if you're going to visit coastal NC/SC do you really need to do anything else but eat? 8)

Was a good few days. Visited Ocracoke island. The docks were filled with HUGH fish from the charters. Cobia and Tuna mostly.  The ferry ride was a good boat trip.  Spent some time on the beach near Hatteras.  Not a person but me and the wife on the beach, It was great.  Did a light house tour and saw at least 5.  A few shops, bought a tshirt and a cane for my Uncle. She bought some jewelry and all was good. Saw several museums but missed the Monitor.  I have not visited many places I wanted to see again. But I think I will return to OBX. Next time I will rent a 4 wheel and get a beach permit.  I think it would be fun to drive the full distance allowed on the coast line.

If you ever go up to the stretch from Kitty Hawk to Nag's Head, I know of a pretty good scuba site when the water conditions are right.

About 150 yards offshore of the beach access site, on 2nd Street of Kill Devil Hills, there's a pair of wrecks known as the "Triangle Wrecks."  It's made up of two ships, the Kyzickes and the Carl Gerhard.  If I remember correctly, the Kyzickes lost maneuvering and sank in a storm.  Years later, the Carl Gerhard also lost maneuvering and struck the wreck of the Kyzickes.  The remains of both ships are arranged in a triangular formation, hence the name.

The folks at Roanoke Island Outfitters, in Manteo, lead beach dives out to the site on the weekends.  The tricky part is having the winds just right, in order to get good visibility.  Normally, the best winds are those blowing from the North-East.  Otherwise, the sediment and silt gets so churned up, you can't see a thing.  On a good, clear water day, you could even just snorkel around the wrecks.  It's also a popular site for free-divers who spear-fish.

Also, that swim can be rough if you wear a wet-suit thicker that 2-3 mm.  Mine's a 5, and I would be burning up in that thing.
