OKTOBERFEST 2017 SHOOT RECAP THREAD
« on: October 29, 2017, 04:26:13 PM »
I can't believe the week went so fast!

I have been out at the range since last Tuesday, and I don't know where the time went....

   Folks started arriving Wednesday, and it was perfect camp weather; We didn't do any shooting Wednesday, but we relaxed and lounged and enjoyed the outdoors, and then we all went to a nice restaurant called  Forrey Grill for a nice dinner, followed by a bonfire at camp;

Thursday was another perfect day, with some long range time in the afternoon and then it was off to the Log Cabin BBQ for a nice dinner, with a good campfire later....

Friday morning we started early, with the long range rifle competition; it was tough, with RWS31 and Rocketvapor  coming in as the finalists,  but in the end Rocketvapor  took the win with 46 out of a possible 50 points at 450 yards! After that it was time for Combat Marksman; contestants had to shoot from the roof of a truck, a culvert pipe, a swinging platform and even from inside of the trunk of a car, all on a timer! RWS31 and 7.62Rebel were the finalists, with 7.62Rebel finally edging out RWS31 by about 5 seconds!  After the comps it was a nice lunch and then a full afternoon of range time, followed by that famous Shoot chili, and back to the campfire....

Saturday dawned cloudy, but we had a great breakfast of all kinds of pancakes (blueberry, strawberry, chocolate chip, you name it) and bacon and hot coffee and then we hit the range for the morning , breaking for a lunch of cheese steaks and bratwurst before going back for the afternoon competitions; First up was SKS, and just as the contestants were beginning to shoot, a light rain began to fall; they finished the first round, and our finalists were RWS31 and rsr79aol, who happen to be brothers, which always makes things interesting, especially when the guys are shooting at pumpkins filled with Tannerite.....rsr79aol hit his pumpkin first with a BIG boom, for the win!....And then the sky opened up and it REALLY started raining; we had to cancel Vintage Rifle, but when the rain slowed down a bit we ran the pistol comp, a fun run 'n gun in a light rain and mud; all the contestants did pretty well, but clock doesn't lie, and JWPerry took the victory, narrowly besting 7.62rebel by 3/4 of a second!  At that point the rain came back with a vengeance, so we put up more canopy shelters and tried to stay under them and dry, with limited success; this is a tough bunch, though (Survivors, don't ya know) and a little bit or rain can't keep us down! Turns out, rain and wind predicted had turned into a full fledged Tropical Storm named Phillipe, and we were catching the edge of it!  We tied everything down and decided to make the Oktoberfest into a hurricane party; we feasted on German sauerbraten, spatzel, fondue, Cajun red beans and rice, and even some Argentine -style Churassco steak brought by our friends Ivan, Kevin, and Joe; We ate and everyone got a big beer stein, and we sampled Polish Vodka, Caramel Whiskey, Jello-shots, and some pretty good craft beer from the growlers that I'mtryin' brought ; We even got a good fire going , even in the wind and rain; in the end, we had a great time, rain or no rain, and everyone was happy to be there, for the friendship, and the experience.....

Today, Sunday, dawned cool and clear (although we did have a cloud or two later) and we had a huge breakfast of biscuits and gravy and eggs and bacon and all sorts of other stuff before cleaning it all up and packing it away until the next time....

It was one of the better events we have had, not in spite of the one bad weather day ( then other days were absolutely perfect) but maybe because of it; we shot a bunch, we ate like kings, we rode out a tropical  storm, and we laughed a lot, all the time......it was a real adventure, in the best possible way, and I was honored to be your host; Thanks to everyone for coming, and for helping, and for making the event so great; these events are the two favorite weeks of the year for me, and it's because of the people here making it so good. 8)

I will see you all in March!

P.S.; I have no pics this time out; but RV and others have some photos and video, and I am sure they will post up when they can.....

We do the event twice a year here in Florida, where the site is based; members come from all over the country for 4 days of shooting and competitions and food and camaraderie ; Our next event will be the 16th Shoot, and will take place in March of 2018. if you look around this subform you will find a lot of info on past events....

Okay thanks for the info!  I will definitely check into it and hopefully one day I may be able to make it to one of the events.

Home, unpacked, and plain old tired. To much fun had by us again. Thanks to everybody who makes this event what it is. It is a great getaway every time we go down to hang out and see everyone along with the fun events that go on. It rained while we were there? I must have been numb from all the Jello shots and didn't feel it. As usual I hosed myself and loaned something out and got beat by said person who borrowed a sighted in rifle with special ammo. :banghead: And had one in the bag only to agree to a shoot off and loose. :banghead: But nice to know this old fart can keep up with the Gazelle, plus 5 seconds. To bad vintage didn't happen, I could have used another 2nd place trophy, oh wait there isn't a trophy for that. On the bright side we didn't bring way to much stuff this time so the unpacking was faster.

Nice to see everybody again and hope to real soon.

And this time I made it all the way home and didn't run out of brownies. Thanks Tracy!

Thanks to everyone who made this happen, it was epic, and congrats to all the winners.  I had a pretty rough time of it with my tent's waterproofing failing (it's now 7 years old and I didn't realize the waterproofing wore off), and all my stuff getting soaked.  BTW I did notice a couple of other tents where the water seemed to be actually wetting the fabric rather than rolling off as it should so if any of you experienced small leaks, look into re-proofing your canopies as you might run into the same situation next time around.

Once again, I didn't get much accomplished shooting-wise but this time it wasn't because I took too much but because of the rain :banghead:.  Still, it didn't matter, I had a great time hanging out with you guys and eating.  It was great catching up, and I even enjoyed being able to compete in the four competitions even though I had horrible results this time around (I vow to regain my titles at some point).  I experienced weapons failure on the Long Distance, SKS, and pistol courses, and on the combat marksman one, well, what I can I say, I guess my body failed on that one! :)

Overall it was a great trip even if I was all alone this time and missing my crew.  I'm sorry I had to head out early because of the wet clothes situation, and thanks again to the guys that came to help me out when I got my dumb @$$ stuck in the mud on the way out.

I've been washing clothes and cleaning stuff since I got home.  Will probably have to take my car in to be detailed.  Fortunately it was a nice clear sunny day here in Miami so I was able to lay down a tarp and put everything (including my air mattress) out to dry.  Like I said, nothing is as effective at drying stuff out quite as well as the good old Florida sun.

Oh yeah, and I'm already planning what I'll do differently for the March event.

See you all there.

BTW, did anyone find an AR lying around somewhere?
I am the one they call Cesar.

Home safe and sound.  Drying my stuff out.  What a great time, incredible "team spirit".  Nearly too much fun as usual and must have gained 5 pounds with the incredible food by the barefoot chef couple. Tropical depression made things interesting, adapt and overcome is what is was about.  Had an Awesome Time!!!

Rocketvapor and Swamplady got home about 4:30AM after poking around, taking a nap stop, and our First at-home nap :)
WOW, what a time.  So happy to say HI again to our old friends, and some new ones.  Please plan on coming back.
I have a few pics and videos and will review (edit out a butt crack or two) and post links later today (probably after another nap).

and the food?  did someone mention the food?  We ate breakfast Sunday and will probably eat something later today.

I'll get the calipers out and measure my long range (451 yds) target, but the 22 Nosler looks like it holds promise.

I'll also be talking to the new Louisiana member between now and March, and convince him to make the trip.  It's only 805 miles.

OK, off to the throne room.  Did someone mention the food?

Here's a shaky and blurry video of the SKS comp.
I forgot that the waterproof housing mutes all but the loudest sounds (even Ranger :) ).
