Safety Spring Question
« on: March 05, 2018, 10:11:57 AM »
Hello Tom,
I sent you an email at the address listed on your website, also figured I'd contact you here as well.  I wanted to send in a trigger group to you from an SKS I just purchased since I'm new to the platform and you are the expert.

Foremost issue with it is its missing a safety spring, I was wondering if that would be something you would mind installing and how that would effect the price.

The early as issued Russian SKS has a friction safety lever & is not meant to have a safety spring.  They were added to the early rifles when refurbed.

He said he bought a
"Got a nice Yugo that I'm currently fixing up, needs a little work but super excited."

Sounds like previous owner broke the spring.
and we all know how that happens.
Well I guess my new **** stirrin paddle don't work . I got a like . WTF 😈

Not a Russian, it is a Yugo.  I guess you missed that part?

Whoops! My bad.  Didn't realize it was a Yugo.  RV, are you thinking the spring is there but the posts on the safely lever are broken off?

Spring broke in half.  One piece falls out.

Look inside, other half might still be there.

Oops, vendor thread.

I agree RV.  I had 2 safety springs that failed in 2 different sks rifles and both when they failed broke in half.

Can't answer for Tom, but wanted to ask smawgmaw if the springs that broke were marked like the one in RV's photo? (USA) That's our replacement Safety Spring available on our shopping cart. And if any of them have broken, we really want to know about it!!

If you feed it junk ammo, why should you expect filet mignon results? Well now you can, with our new "Neck & Throat" chamber reaming service!

No, they were not USA marked and they appeared to be oem on Chinese SKS rifles and looked a bit diferent than the pic RV provided.  Actually one of the SKS safety springs was already broken when I recieved it.  The seller did tell me about it before hand.  On another one, the safety spring broke while the rifle was in use.

Yeah, the forked end can be wider and slightly different shape on the Chinese. But ours fits them all.

Some guy might have come close to breaking it when he installed it, then a little later when you were shooting it, the last molecules released and it fell in two pieces.   molecules?

Yea you are correct its a Yugo, and the trigger group likely wasn't put back on the gun correctly.
But oddly enough there wasn't a broken spring or anything in it.  It was simply completely missing.  Also interesting too but when I dissassembled it the first time the recoil spring was backwards. Go figure

If the thing was abused previously at the very least everything else in the gun is is good shape.  Bore has no corrosion, bluing intact, all matching numbers.  I really can't complain.

I hear you on the recoil spring being installed backwards.  My brother bought an sks recently and asked me to check it out for him.  The recoil spring was installed backwards and was damaged on the machined retainer and first one or two spring coils from it being installed that way.

Usually safety springs are broken by installation of removal of the trigger group with the safety on...

Broken with the safety ON?
Is that on SAFE or on FIRE :)

3 AM reply to an old thread :)
You be the expert but some folks need to watch a video.

On mine it seems that the extra clearance for the release to move freely is with the safety lever forward.
With it to the rear the clearance is too tight to allow the Trigger group to release.
