A what if question on bayonet with rivet.
« on: October 24, 2019, 02:12:20 PM »
With 922r in mind, my "what if" question is how would someone install/peen the rivet to mount the bayonet, asking for a friend "wink wink"

Install the rivet head down and support it on something solid like an anvil or vise. Use the appropriate sized center punch and a 2 pound ball peen hammer or similar to flare the open end until it is tight. If the rifle was imported with the bayonet in place, it should not be a problem to re-attach it.

Always wear eye protection when using a hammer!

The rivet can only go in one way. PAX

So to add to this topic: I had another SKS with a rivet bayonet, another CGA import with "91 xxxxx" serial number, just like the one I mentioned (it also has serial number "91 xxxxx" Well after checking my other rifle, it's bayonet rivet is not permanently riveted and can be removed, so my new question is are these CGA imports with rivet bayonets are not permanently attached?

No. They should be flared. Could have been a "bayo ban wars" thing. PAX

I just found a similar pinned barrel SKS rifle on a popular gun auction website and in one picture it's a close-up of the bayonet rivet and indeed it is flared, I guess mine were missed during the process, thanks GuitarmanNick and PAX for your comments!

OK, I'm confused.  Why doesn't your friend's bayonet install with a screw?

Possible, but not likely. Probably the rivets were removed during the "Bayo Ban Wars". They're easy to punch out. PAX

Larry, Some of them use a screw and some use a rivet. It depends upon the lug that is used. One will have threads on one side for a screw and the other will not be threaded and require the rivet.

I quick Google search shows rivets and screws.  However, every ChiCom I've ever owned had the screw on style bayonet lug.

Does anyone have any ideas as to the percentages of each style?

I don't if this will help but the two I own are stamped "Made in China by CGA", "Imported by GLNIC LA CA" and have the "91" serial prefix which I assume is the year 1991, no arsenal stamp and both are pinned barrels.
