Repairing Cracked or Broken Wooden Stocks
« on: June 20, 2020, 08:58:41 PM »
Been reading here about some cracked stocks and thought I might chime in.  After being a gun maker & gun smith for forty some years, I've had my share of stocks to repair.  (Building rifle #401 at the moment.)  If you want that stock shootable once again, get thee some of Brownnell's AcraGlas gel.  Not the runny liquid.  Now this is the real deal.  Gunsmith grade epoxy.  Once repaired, you will break new wood if you try to break the thing apart.  Many shooters use it for glass bedding the barrel channel.  Fantastic stuff.  This is no Crazy Glue!!

I thought you were going to give us a step by step tutorial with pictures.  :)

Good info.  What's your thought on using reinforcing pins?
I am the one they call Cesar.

It depends on where the break is, how the break runs, how much pressure the break area receives, is the break on an active gun or pretty much a wall hanger, and if there is room enough to get pins/ring shank nails in adequately.  I've seldom found the need for pins when using Acra Glas providing you clamp the repair adequately.
