So I have two like new SKSS "para" model carbines. One came with the spike bayonet attached I bought recently and one that I bought last year without a bayonet. I decided to fix that and ordered a para bayonet with all the parts/spring and rivet (both of the guns use the non-threaded rivet-style bayonet lug attachment). When putting on the "new" bayonet, and pondering over how to get the "open" end of the rivet flared/flattened out to retain the rivet, I also noticed that the rivet on the other rifle's bayonet lug isn't flattened/flared either. Both rivets are held tight in the lug holes when the bayonets are in the closed position (folded against stock) but you can push them back out with finger pressure when the bayonets are in the open positions (clearly there's much more tension on them when closed).
How do you flare/mushroom/flatten out the rivet's end (is hollow/tubular only for a small portion of the rivet's length)? It barely sticks out the other side of the lug. I don't have a center punch that is big enough and don't have any ball bearings to do it with. Thanks in advance for any suggestions. I don't want to try just smashing it against a flat surface and mangling the rivet end.
