can anyone identify what I have here?
« on: July 31, 2024, 12:49:04 AM »
Purchased this recently and don't know what to make of it. Any ideas?

-short SN / matching but I don't know what it signifies
-black metal variant of receiver/blade bayonet
-five-round flush-fit magazine (with "made in china" text)
-darker wood than normal for a Chinese / a diamond shape beneath the SN on the stock

The only aftermarket stuff on it appears to be the muzzle brake, butt, grip pad, and optic but I'm not certain.

So what is this thing? Took it to the range recently and it shoots nicely but would love to know more about it.

The magazine is definitely a Chinese aftermarket unit.

First, welcome to the boards. Second, it looks like a refurbished Russian that Bubba got his hands on. The trigger housing looks to be from an early Tula given the flat bottom side in front of the guard. If you remove the scope mount to get to the receiver cover, if it is OEM, it should give you some more info as to whether it is a Tula or Izhevsk and the year. Can't tell on the gas block, is it 45 degree angle or curved?

Great to be here! I've attached a photo of the gas block here.

I tried to take the scope mount off but sadly it looks like I may not have the right size hex key for it. Rather than keep trying and potentially stripping it I'm going to ask a buddy for help later in the week. Really looking forward to seeing underneath in hopes of possibly solving this mystery.

Yeah, that's a later, post 1952 gas block.

And the hex key size for that scope mount chicago bolt is probably either 2.5mm or 3mm. Looks like an old B-square mount and probably Chinese made so thinking metric and not SAE.

You called it! Post-1952... finally got off that scope mount to discover that I have myself a 1954 Izzy!

The only downside is I am incredibly disappointed in the random 5 round aftermarket Chinese magazine. It is so demoralizing half-loading a bunch of stripper clips on my way down to the range lol.

Too bad about the mag, that's a rare one. Are you in Canada? PAX
