Pick your gear, Stranded on an alien planet!
« on: December 28, 2008, 12:00:18 AM »

I modeled this after a similar post I saw on AR15.com. So if the OP from that thread sees this, I'm giving you the credit for the idea, don't sue me.

I also posted this on www.whenshtf.com - some of you may have seen it there.

The Scenario

A group of aliens abducts you and takes you to an earth-like planet. They explain that you will be dropped off in an environment roughly the size of the continental United States. Terrain varies from rolling grassy plains to steep mountains, dense jungle, and vast old growth forests. None of the plants are toxic (I.e. none will kill you) but only a few are what we would consider edible, as most have thorns or taste bitter.

Animals come in all the variety that they do on earth, but you don't recognize any of them; some look like prehistoric creatures, some look like something out of a sci-fi movie. Some of them are dangerous (toxic venom, or predators), but these are easily recognizable (same way we can identify dangerous animals here).

The seasons and climate is roughly the same in the entire planet. Summers are relatively cool with lots of rain showers but few heavy storms; winters are cold, but not particularly so. It doesn't snow in this region. Water is readily available in the form of springs, creeks, rivers, ponds, and lakes.

Since you are an alien you are immune to all viruses and bacteria on this planet. Therefore cuts/wounds cannot become infected, and there is no need to filter/boil/purify water.

There are other human beings on this planet, including some species of now extinct human. All are stone age hunter-gatherers; they do not speak any earth language, and many of them are hostile. They are armed with flint knives, spears, atlatls, slings, and in some cases primitive bows and arrows. All tribes know how to use fire.

You will be dropped on this planet with the following equipment:

- One pair of shoes/boots of your choice.
- One set of BDUs (pants and shirt/jacket) in the camo pattern of your choice.
- One hat in the same camo pattern as your BDUs, your choice of style.
- One waterproof poncho of your choice in the same camo pattern as your BDUs.
- One good hooded parka/coat of your choice in the same camo pattern as your BDUs.
- You will also receive 2 OD green undershirts and 3 changes of socks/underwear.

You are allowed to bring one long arm of your choice. (must be an existing firearm, no Phased plasma rifles in the 40 watt range) You may customize the long arm in any way you like (custom finishes, stocks, chrome lining, ect.). And add any accessories you want (optics, Vertical fore-grip, light rails, bayonets, ect.).

You may bring one sidearm with all the same rules.

Ammo, For long guns you get the standard combat load of 210 rounds preloaded in magazines/stripper clips (if you choose a shotgun you get 100 rounds in a bandoleer), with your choice of ammo. For handguns you get 4 magazines (3 + 1 in the gun) or if you chose a revolver a loaded cylinder plus 3 speed loads. Again with a choice of ammo. In addition every year on the anniversary of your abduction the aliens will drop a sealed tin containing an ammo load out as outlined above in a clearing near your current location and mark it with a smoke grenade. (So you had better keep track of the time and hope any hostile natives don‘t investigate the strange smoke.)

You may bring one knife of any existing brand or style (a bayonet counts as accessory for the long arm, so if you get one that comes with a bayonet that's a nice loophole to get you a second knife).

You may bring two methods of making fire.

You may bring one flashlight or other form of light (weapon-mounted lights don't count as they are weapon accessories, another nice loophole). You get one spare battery (or set of batteries if it takes more than one) for the flashlight and any weapon-mounted light(s).

You get one tool besides the knife, flashlight, and fire starters. This can be a tool of any sort, so long as it is not (primarily) a weapon (i.e., no pepper spray, tasers etc.). An additional knife is allowed if it is not designed to be used as a weapon (example: a multitool or Swiss army knife is fine, A Ka-Bar is not.).

You get one piece of equipment that isn't a tool, such as binoculars, compass, rope, etc. so long as it isn't a weapon and cannot be used as one.

You also get a small first aid kit. With basic bandages, pain killers, creams and ointments.

You get a single book to read for entertainment and a single book for practical purposes (to help you survive). Any knowledge in a survival or camping book from earth is applicable to this region of this planet, except for anything about specific plants or animals.

You get a one-man pup tent, sleeping bag with pad, a large ALICE pack to carry everything in, and a chest rig and belt pouches to carry spare magazines for your long arm and sidearm in (if they use magazines; if you picked a tube-fed shotgun and a revolver, for example, you would just get a holster, cartridge belt and bandoleer.).

Once you have chosen your gear, you will be dropped off in the middle of an open field without being able to see the terrain from above. The aliens have implanted a locator chip somewhere in your body (you don't know where, and even if you did the chip is packed with a high grade plastic explosive and would detonate when you tampered with it) and will return to pick you up and take you back to earth in five years if you're still alive. You don't get any choice in whether or not you get dropped off on this planet, but if you survive long enough to get picked up then the aliens will return you to Earth.

So... how do you prepare yourselves within these guidelines?

I'd take an SKS D with a 4x scope on it. I'd take a synethic stock cut out for drum mags.

Just stay away from the big animals, hunker down in a cave somewhere.

You wouldn't need to kill many natives, just kill a few to make an example. I'd bring a lot of soap and toilet paper. I'd set my self up like Marlin Brando in Apocalypse Now. Yep.

And you're wrong. Dead wrong. There'd be plenty of disease there. Where there are people, there are people diseases.

Start banging native chicks and if you both teach them your language in 5 years you'll be able to communicate.

I'd bring a bible and a book on metallurgy/gun manufacturing/ore prospecting

I'd be tempted to try to set up a primitive type of munitions plant (to conquer said planet), but I'd be worried about the possibility for revolt.

Copied Rem/Curly list format:

Shoes/Boots: (from what I've read on the boards) Danner waterproof, cold weather
BDUs: GhillieSkins Mamba Suit (Multicam pattern)
Hat: Anti-riot helmet with face/neck protection (like this: http://www.armynavydeals.com/asp/products_details.asp?SKU=1991&ST=2&Anti-Riot%20Tactical%20Helmet) – considering that the primitives would be using mostly sticks/rocks, or weapons made from them. Plus, it would look scary to them if need be
Poncho: US Military with quilted liner (+1!)
Parka/Coat: Carhartt C76 3-in-1 parka (black)
Long arm: VEPR .308 with 10 round mags, tech sights, threaded suppressor, and ATN 4-12x80 DNS 3 Day/Night Riflescope, USGI sling, all camo-painted
Sidearm: 9mm Uzi with threaded suppressor, folding wire stock, after-market side cocking lever, B-Square Weaver mount, Leupold FX-II 4x28 handgun scope, sling – all camo-painted
Ammo choice-
Longarm: Federal 168gr Gold Medal Match BTHP
Sidearm: Speer 9MM +P 124 Grain Gold Dot Hollow Point
Knife: KaBar KA 1223 w/ Partially Serrated Blade
Fire (two methods): Blast Match, Heavy Duty Butane Torch
Flashlight: Maglite LED 4 D-Cell (useful as weapon/metal container after battery death)
Tool: Folding 5-in-1 Camp Tool (Shovel, Axe, Pick, Saw, Compass) like this one: http://www.buffalogapoutfitters.com/storefrontprofiles/processfeed.aspx?sfid=110172&i=145101116&mpid=7349&dfid=1
Non-Tool Equipment: 1000' spool of paracord (http://www.lapolicegear.com/truspec.html)
Books: Most recent edition of the Columbia Encyclopedia (which is a single, massive volume), Printed copies of all my survival guides bound into one volume (or if that's not acceptable, the US Army survival manual)

From www.geekologie.com

"The inventer of a bear-protection suit has created a much slimmer version which has been designed to stave off bullets, explosives, knives, and clubs. The suit is called Trojan and the inventer describes it as the "first ballistic, full exoskeleton body suit of armour" and he hopes to get it deployed for Canadian soldiers in Afghanistan and US soldiers in Iraq. The suit has stood up to an elephant gun, and is made from high-impact plastic lined with ceramic bullet protection over ballistic foam. Included in the suit are compartments for emergency morphine and salt, a knife and emergency light. Built into the forearms are a small recording device, a pepper-spray gun and a detachable transponder that can be swallowed in case of trouble. The whole suit comes in at 18 kilograms and overs everything but the fingertips and the major joints, and could allegedly be mass-produced for about $2,000. Plus, if you saw an army of these things coming at you you wouldn't even fight. You'd just give up and pray the space robots haven't come to anally probe you."

I will start with that as my BDUs, Parka etc etc.  I will be back with the rest of my selections as I give as much thought to them as this.

Now, see, PID – THAT is what I want for the Zombie Invasion! I always wondered why people in Zombocalypses don't ever seem to make zombie-proof suits. They always loot the gun stores and what not for guns, but no one hits up the armory for some good riot gear! That'd be the first place I went, and/or to this dude's awesome lab, where he makes this stuff! :) :) :)

Edit: Apparently, his lab is a regular garage in a Canadian suburb... http://www.metacafe.com/watch/528600/the_trojan_suit/
