i just acquired a norinco sks #7,xxx,xxx, which your guide tells me was made in 63' and stampped 0136 in a rectangle,  it came fresh out the box, i cleaned it up and looks great but it came with a spike bayo and a spike groove in the stock! is this right? all #s match and its stamped on end of reciever, trigger guard, bolt ,side and stock, the strap is also side mounted on the stock. do i have a real collectable or a knock off?
cocked,locked,and ready to rock

Hi everyone:
I came a cross a Chinese SKS. and I am  not very good at knowing what I have but thought someone could give it a try.
On the left hand side it has 0221 inside a rectangle box  with three Chinese writings, then what appears to be a serial number
of 250013XX  P  Then after that in small letters SKS  7.62 X 39 made in China by NORINCO  KSI  Pomona  CA.

Any help would be appreciated!!!
Thanks Guy's

dead nuts, I wouldn't put a lot of stock in the '63 date.  I don't know that that dating system works on an 0136 rectangle weapon.  I think you have a good one.  Hang onto it and don't screw it up.

Aircop, all the nomenclature through the serial number tells you where it was made, what it is and it's serial number; all probably put there by the mfr.  Everything else is stamped by the importer, KSI.  I've heard that the P at the end of the serial number signifies something like "made for Pakistan".

If you both want more info, I suggest you start a thread with your questions and provide as much info as you can, including pictures.  The voyeurs on this forum salivate for pictures.

I own the same type model sks, I like it. When I bought it I was told it was a paratrooper, it makes since for it to be a navy model compact and easy to store, it would not take up much room on a ship. The info in this post helped me alot thanks guys.

Jkeen579, you are correct in the main when you tap: "Trying to make anything a definate with these rifles is almost impossible." Alas, we in North America can only base our judgment upon examples in our hands as we have no access to governmental records in China.

However, we do have sufficient examples - in hand - to make tentative judgments based upon observation.

The dating scheme does, indeed, seem universal across the constellation of PLA arsenals.

ad,
Perhaps we can pose a discussion on the more common and uncommon Chinese threads/questions.
lose proton has referred to you, in respect, and would, and I, as one, would like to learn any input, as to, Chinese dating, SKS manufacturing (variances), mostly of different factories.(I prefer to not post on a "sticky".)

So I just pulled my SKS out of moth balls after about 15 years. It's a Norinco. The serial's throwing me for a loop, though. It's 56, then a single kanji, [0303] 25000XXXP

From what I can figure, using the writeup on the first page, it's an '81 made for Pakistan at factory 0303 but that doesn't make sense because the surplusrifles writeup says chinese type 56's ceased production in '71. 56+25 = 81, though... Where am I going wrong? It also says Pomona, CA.

It also has 00236 engraved on the left side of the butt and on the top of the receiver. Any idea what that is?

Assuming that you mean the back of the receiver cover when you say "top of the receiver", I would guess the XXX of your serial number to be 236?

That would be correct on all counts. I also found the 00236 on the magazine and the trigger guard so I'm left to assume that's the whole "numbers matching" serial thing that everyone talks about?

In your case, 00236 is simply the last 5 digits of your serial number.  If this is present on all the appropriate components (incl the bolt carrier), then, yes, your rifle is all matching.

Thanks for a great job well done. I have been a fan of the SKS for years, owned 6 different kinds, now own 2 Chinese, but have never seen an explanation of the various types of Chinese rifles.

I just bought an SKS marked NORINCO SKS 7.62x39 KSI K Sport Pomona CA.
The SN is 26539, matching on the receiver, bolt carrier, trigger group and magazine. Stock, top action cover and bolt are also 5 numbers , but not the same numbers. There are no other marks on the rifle except for some very small what appear to be characters in some oriental language, but they don't appear to be Chinese-they are very simple . There is one such stamp on the bolt carrier and a matching stamp on the front sight base.
The stock is  heavily grained wood, in very used condition and covered with poorly applied varnish. Front end gas tube wood is completely different wood/ dark brown solid color, unmarked.
Gun is all milled, milled out side on bolt. Trigger is very good and gun seems to function and fit very well. Steel finish is a matt blue.
It looks very similar to a '50's Russian SKS I once had.
Just bought it and cleaned it, have not fired it yet-Bore is excellent, FWIW.

Could this be a Militia rifle or what?
Thanks.

Mark, you'd be much better off posting some definitive pictures.  Sounds like a Chinese military type except I've never seen one with only 5 digits in the serial number as shown on the left side of the receiver.

I don't know if this is the right place or not but, all my numbers match. Bolt carrier, receiver, magazine and trigger housing.009589. On the receiver, just foward of the serial is a triangle, in which, appears to be a small tilted rectangle 22 and a tilted 3. All of this followed by 3 (Chinese) symbols then 25 and the serial#.

The photo isn't very clear, having camera issues...I ain't smart enough to use it. Would also like to date this weapon if possible.
I’m not ignoring you…you’re just insignificant.

It's really hard to tell from that picture, but that could be an 8 digit serial # - 25009589.  Do the trigger group, magazine, receiver cover really have 6 digit #s?
