'nother SKS-M Question
« on: April 28, 2009, 10:59:29 AM »
Hi All,
I've read similar posts however I don't have a clear understanding of compliance with the SKS that uses AK mags.  Sorry in advance if this has already been covered.

I purchased a Norinco SKS Sportster that uses AK-47 magazines.  It already has a Tapco T6 stock.  With my other Chinese SKSs, I simply add a Tapco T6 with a Tapco 20 round magazine and I'm g2g.  With this particular SKS (with a T6), what else do I need to do?  I'm assuming I need to replace two more parts.  I would like to use the metal (imported) AK mags but I'm not married to them.

What do you suggest I do?

Three more parts as the AK mags have a separate floorplate

Compliance options include gas piston, floorplates and/or followers for your imported mags, Murrays FCG parts, etc.

Your M has 15 imported parts in its OE configuration.  Stock and handguard are minus two, leaving 13 imported parts -- three parts too many.  Your parts swap alternatives are:  Gas piston (-1), followers (-1), and floor plate (-1).  Or:  Murray FCG (-3).  Be aware that 100% US-made AK mags have a poor reputation for reliability -- which is why Plug and I suggested swapping mag parts and not the whole mag.  Also be aware that using magazine parts for compliance purposes can be an issue should you acidentally grab an unconverted mag.

Another option would be to just leave it alone.  922(r) only prohibits "assembly", not possession or transfer.  But be prepared to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that you purchased the rifle in it's current configuration . . . some folks are understandably nervous about this option . . .

As always YMMV,
