Pin-on Muzzle Brake & Ten or less game?
« on: December 31, 2005, 04:01:18 PM »
Does a pin-on muzzle brake count as a "muzzle attachment"?

I.e., if I had a 10 or less compliant SKS (chinese), and added a foreign made muzzle brake, would it then be non-compliant?  Or is the muzzle brake not counted as a "part" because it is pin-on?

Flash Suppressors are a no-no.  Muzzle brakes only control flip and recoil and does not hide the ignition of a round.  I've seen determination letters on forums which indicate that these are no problem (brakes).  But I also saw that 20 round fixed mags were OK which is in question on some new threads here.  Wonder if there are new determinations floating around now which states a new position by the BATF?

Thanks, I understand what they are.

20 round fixed mags manufactured in the US would be fine.  The problem comes with 20 round fixed foriegn manufactred mags.

The key question I am asking is if a pin-on brake counts as a "part" or not.

Muzzle breaks are a part.  They count as "muzzle attachment".  Adding a flash suppressor is ok as long as it's considered a US made gun.

Yes, the pin-on brake counts as a muzzle attachment for 922(r) purposes.

As was mentioned, a muzzle brake is not a so-called "restricted feature" which would force you to play the "10-or-less-game".

Is there any way to tell where a muzzle brake was made?  Mine doesn't have any markings on it.

Not really, except to point out that most if not all of the ones for the SKS are US made.

Ah, dug through the trash and found the package label.  It is US made.  :)

Good exchange.  I looked at my AK-47 brake which has US instructions but not were it's made.  The two SKS types have nothing on the package. Anything for export should have a country per early 1900's laws.  Guess I have to call the company for country made in.  Thanks for the enlightment on 922 and parts.
