My first and only attempt with a Tapco (Zytel) five rounder was unsuccessful, but not for the reason of the hollowed extension.  I simply could not make them feed as either duckbills or with duckbilless.  The angle of feed varies from up to down with these (cheap imitation) mags.

Kind of late replying to this, I don't have any issues with the two that I have as far as feeding. I just wasn't sure the zytel stuck out far enough to make the front lug before the extension hollowed out. Guess I'll have to go back into the archives and find the dimensions for the mag mod.

You want to leave about 10mm of the db so you can shape it.
