Best aftermarket muzzle break?
« on: October 16, 2016, 11:50:44 PM »
OK, so my SAR1 [Romanian, 7.62x39] entered the country neutered under the Clinton ban and I'm the original [US] owner. It had it's muzzle device and threading removed to meet import restrictions and 922r. I've since added more 922r components and now want a muzzle break. Threading the barrel and adding the detent/spring assy. is no big deal for me but which break?

I want best recoil compensation, not necessarily flash suppression but I don't want to dump an entire paycheck for a break. Looking at not much more than $50. Also of note, I'm a left-handed shooter [I know the one Krink slant break has 2 notches for left/right shooters]. Just wondering what you guys are using and if you like them or not.
....So help me God.

I think this looks very promising considering your budget. There's a video below with specs and a demo from AKOU. Personally I prefer the AK-74 style brake but they are loud as hell and I'm sure there are better ones on the market.

I don't know that I love the look, but I really like what the Manticore Nightbrake does. Very effective.

Yes, I saw that one and based upon that particular video I like it a lot. But it's the only video of it's kind on that particular brake [that I can find].

The muzzle device is a "brake" vs a "break".
You first need to determine the outside diameter of the barrel.  It is likely not suitable for the standard 14mm x 1 pitch threading as it was not designed to be threaded.  It may have to be threaded 1/2 x 28 right hand.
Some of the AK74 Romanian rifles had a 22mm threaded extension on the front sight base (FSB) and the barrel was never threaded.  Some have amore standard AKM FSB.., it depends
They neutered the 22mm threads off the FSB in most cases.
This created a longer than normal setback as well.

Pics of the front end would help and the OP of the barrel.

A guide to threading.

A Romanian PM Model 86 AIMS 74 looked like this>>

OK there grammar Nazi................. :tongue2: :sign5:

I ordered this device to add to the muzzle, just in the hopes it might fit [slender profile barrel as you'll see below]:

....by getting the brake, threading it onto the adapter and then seating it in place on the muzzle. I planned on marking the barrel with the Allen screws and dimpling it at the 4 cardinal points and then thread locking them in place. Figure the same principle used in mounting a gas block to an AR barrel.

Here are 3 pics of the muzzle:

Of course, I'll remove the paint from around the muzzle as necessary and I'm hoping the whole thing works out...but in order for me to complete the job I have to order whatever brake I plan on using. Mounting the adapter before having the brake on hand makes no sense.

....So help me God.

I just pulled this out of my mailbox.  Appears very well made for the $.  And in USA!!
Keep in mind that in order to be a "muzzle brake", (reduce recoil) the front exit hole needs to be barely bigger than the bullet.
Some that claim to be a muzzle brake look fancy but are large ID all the way out....not redirecting much high pressure.
Now I need a die....die bore guide....die stock....tap oil... :?

If your muzzle is .550", you have enough meat for the 14mm LH thread.
Remember, effective recoil reduction means LOUD!!  There's no way around it.

When I got my first AK it came with only a thread protector. No biggie I thought, never had a muzzle device on any of my Sks. Boy was I in for a surprise. The muzzle rise seems considerably more.
Any way I did not want to spend a lot and ended up with the Tapco slot brake and I must say that the muzzle rise issue is all but gone.  Stupid cheap but effective.  However it it loud.

FYI a muzzle device is a "brake" not a "break". :)

I think I will start using 'braque', and invest in duct tape companies.

I have the DA fighter brake 14x1 and I love it so far.

The Tapco slot brake is loud but highly recommended by many.
