Stripped buttstock screw holes
« on: January 06, 2013, 06:38:06 PM »
So I am trying to put a strap on a wooden buttstock. Unfortunately the holes for the mount have been stripped. I filled them with wood glue, when it dries will be strong enough to hold the weight of the rifle and general abuse, or should I have used something else? Thanks.

Epoxy would be better.

Just wood glue? Put some tooth picks in while it's still wet.

Next time you need wood in there, drill out to the size of a wood dowel. Like a 1/4 inch then glue the wood dowel in place then drill a new hole. It will last a lot longer.

If you use glue., oil the screws before installing them so they do not get glued to the stock.  That you do not want to do.

I would drill out the holes, and put some scrap dowel rod in there if your gonna use wood glue. Fresh meat for the screw threads.

+1 on the tooth picks. When I was a flooring installer that was a trick we would use for installing metal onto a concrete floor. Drill a 1/8" hole snap a round tooth pick in half and stick it down into the hole then hammer the twist nail down. Works very well. The other option is just get some longer screws. You can try 1 1/4" coarse thread drywall screws. Or 1 1/2" if needed.

I use Wood Glue and Dowel.
Then re-drill the hole to the Minor Diameter of the screw.

At least that's what they taught us in Wood Shop back in the Dark Ages (1970's).

Let me give a little more detail on using epoxy. Fill the holes with epoxy, wait for it to set up completely, then drill pilot holes.
Really solid screw anchor points.

I did the wood glue and toothpicks. It feels pretty solid. Going forward if they pop out I might use the dowel rod technique.

Inserting & drilling a dowel usually works better than the toothpicks, because the toothpicks can change the offset of the hole and cause it to wallow, or cause the screw to go in crooked. My dad did a lot of furniture repair when I was younger and this is the method he usually used.

Guys:

You can also go to your local hardware store and in the fastener section look for threaded brass furniture inserts.  I use them on my stocks to hold the sides together.

I drill the stock holes out to the proper diameter and depth, dab on some 5-minute epoxy, screw the inserts in, and allow the glue to dry.  You can get them threaded in several thread sizes, and they cost me about $1.25 for two.

Makes a good installation, and can be drilled out if you need to replace them.
