« on: February 03, 2015, 09:58:13 AM »
Needing a MAK 90 dust cover or equal. Recently picked up a Mak 90 that has a aftermarket railed dust cover.

Mak 90s were smooth right? Probably a Saiga dust cover would work, Poly tech has the smooth Chinese for something like 50 bucks.

But much cheaper -

I've always heard that the sheet metal used in the Chinese stamped receivers was a little thicker than that of the Euro AK's. It's late and I'm tired, so this may be a "duh" question, but, does the extra sheet metal thickness translate to wider OD measurements of the receiver? Or, does it mean narrower ID measurements inside the receiver? If the extra is on the outside, the Polish cover may not work. I suppose it would depend on how much extra clearance is "built in" with the Polish receiver covers for interchangeability on the battlefield.

Back when Global Trades/Armory USA was building receivers and rifles, they had an option to use a 1.6mm sheet metal thickness for your receiver. (As opposed to the standard 1.0mm)  I never thought to ask about the dimension differences. Just wanted to throw that rambling nonsense thought in there.

The inside is smaller. Regular AKM furniture has to be fitted to the thicker receiver.

I have used Chinese dust covers on Saigas, I didn't see them as any wider.

The Polish cover that Onepoint linked is a good choice.

I may try to take the rails off the current dust cover. It other wises works just fine. If not, I may just save up for a TWS Dogleg system.

The railed topcover is pretty funky under that rail.  It is pre-shaped for the rail and is bulged and flat with the rivet holes.  Up to you but for $15 + shipping the replacement is a easy deal.
The TWS is a whole other story of the rail + optic in the $200-$300 range.  But that works too.

Invest in the TWS cover. Was the best thing that ever happened to my 90. It fits perfect, and after about 1k rounds, still rock solid performance.

My Mak came with that same stupid railed dust cover too. The thing would pop off and smack me in the forehead while shooting. I replaced it with a Polish smooth dustcover like in the link above. It required a little filing to not interfere with the safety. Other then that it fit fine.

Yes., the smooth cover is worth having despite any other additions like the TWS.  That TWS is a longer term or $300 investment etc.

^ Yes., if price is not an issue. Polytech still has a supply of Chinese OEM parts.
