Are these rivets ok?
« on: December 24, 2015, 10:20:06 PM »
Well guys I have been trying to nurse a pretty severe case of AK fever that I have developed recently. Picked up an OPAP at a very reasonably price from the guys over at Prepper Gun Supply. I did the quality check at the gun shop before I signed for it and everything seemed to check out. However, after I took it home I did a more through inspection of the rifle. What caught my eye was a looked like a pretty bad rivet on the accessories rail. I then began a frantic search to see if others had the same problem. I noticed that two of the trunnion rivets looked to be bit off. Can you guys tell me what you think.

The trunion rivets are hard to see but it looks as if they were driving them into place and just quit halfway through. They look like they are seated far enough but they were not pressed properly. Click on the images to enlarge them.

Thank you sir!! I will add this to my list of vids to watch when I can. I'm currently living without actual Internet and limited to a couple gigs a month data. No videos for me.

The two mag well area trunnion rivets look fine. One looks like it got double tapped on the press bucking plate.
The rail rivet is a bit shy of a full crush.  But most often they swell sufficiently to be secure.
One test is to attach a mount if you have one and hen pull it left t right to see if the rail or the rivet shank moves by observing inside & out as you put pressure on the mount, side to side.
I would think it is OK but testing it is a good idea,

I've seen far worse on other guns that function fine. Other than Valmet made guns, I'd say yours is typical. I have been seeing lately some are using the punch method that not only spreads the rivet, but leaves an indented and cupped head.

I agree.
You might want to just keep an eye on them after you shoot it some.
The first thing they'll do if they start to loosen is spin in the hole or wiggle a little.
If that happens, try to find someone with a rivet crimp tool.

Here is a better picture of the accessories rail rivet. Haven't had a chance to go to the range with it. Do you guys think this is something that calls for a warranty repair from Century? Does the rivet need to be heated before pressing?

There are 3 rivets holding that rail, two rivets would be enough.
It takes a lot of force to get the rivet as flat as you show in the pic so it's probably plenty tight in the hole as is.
So if the other 2 rivets look good, you should be GTG.

If that was a front trunnion rivet, I might think different.
The rest of the rivets in pics look great.

no, rivets are set when cold but you need a dimpled plate so you don't flatten the head.
