M64 RPK Rear Sight Question
« on: December 29, 2016, 08:09:00 PM »
I've  had one of these 'Polish' Century Arms RPKs for a while now and have noticed that sometimes it shoots dead on and sometimes it's quite off. I finally noticed that the rear sight leaf has a lot of lateral play in it. I'm wanting to replace the leaf and am uncertain of what type I should buy. While sold as Polish it is actually more a mix Master. I know the trunnion is Romanian, for example. So I don't really care about historical accuracy. I just want something that will work properly. Are RPK leafs different than standard AK leafs? Sources for a replacement?

A lot of the RPK variants had windage adjustable sights. I'm not sure if Poland ever bothered with the RPK due to their RPDs. The model sounds off also. A PM64 is a Romanian RPK (AES10B). And a M64 is a Yugo AK47 model as well. This sounds like a mix master or marketing model already. Maybe century had spare parts about.

Check the front end of the rear sights and the sight spring. Those are the bits that cause all the tension normally in the sight. After that we can move forward.

Check the notch of the sight. It looks off.

The screw assembly basically moves it right and left.

I see what you are noticing, but the problem is that the whole assembly wiggles back and forth very easily. It will not hold zero at all.

The axle for the windage adjuster is bent. The rear slotted "tube" looks to be bent more open on the right.  It may have taken a big hit.
Worth taking it out of the RSB ad di9sassembling it to straighten the parts.
See if the front pivot nubs are bet and repair the rear.
There is a small pin that holds the windage assembly in place that needs removed.

The entire leaf then. Check the nubs, trunion, and spring. If you have another ak compare the tension.  The springs can end up bent on installation or not bent from a supplier. My M72 had a flattened spring in the kit.

After that if it's the drum attempt a basic repair as AKBlue stated.

They were billed as Polish, but were actually built from Romanian parts kits.  A Russian or Romanian will be a direct replacement.  I had one, sold it and bought an actual AES-10B.

The leaf was totally buggered. Waiting on a replacement.  Aside from that issue the rifle has been flawless. Probably 500 rounds through it without a hiccup. Wasn't   over priced and is good fun.

Which part of the leaf specifically?

Did you contact century and try for a replacement leaf? Just curious.

One of the two nubs that secure it to the base seems to be worn to a smaller diameter which allows the whole thing to wiggle. Didn't contact Century- too impatient!
