My gas piston is wobbly...

I think the only one that wasn't on the same page as the rest of us was Toad. He was talking about the gastube/top handguard. The piston on my Maadi AK is wobbly. Holding it by the bolt carrier and shaking it, the piston wobbles. I took it to a local milsurp gunshop, the owner said there was no problem with it wobbling. We discussed it on here a while back and the general concensus was that it's normal for it to wobble. Some even say it's supposed to have play, so when firing it won't bind up in the gas tube/gas port/gas block(gas system in general).

That's a great answer man. Obviously we are on the same page. My bad. And thanks for your input.

Glad to help. If you think about it, the AK design is based on loose tolerances. If the piston were rigid against the bolt carrier, that would cause alot of stress on the piston and gas system when slamming back and forth during firing.

That was my ref. to the monkey builders at Century. When they repinned and welded up the USA pistons as a compliant part they didn't consider the extra wear they were creating.

Well I certainly can't argue with that, because my WASR was a century build.

I believe the gas piston is supposed to loosen up as it becomes more used. It's normal and intended. I think also that it isn't supposed to be screwed in completely flush against the bolt carrier.

When installing a gas piston you're supposed to screw it in all the way, then back it out a smidge and pin it.
