Albanian problem at the range ---
« on: September 26, 2013, 12:51:16 AM »
A friend of mine bought an Albanian sks off the internet and had problems from the start.
It won't push the bolt back far enough to extract the shell after firing.
He took it to a gunsmith and was told that the piston extension & spring was missing.
Would one from a Chinese sks work ok with the Albanian and where's the best place
to find one ?
                               Thanks

Dang....  Hope tbe piston didnt get jammed in the rearward position.  Yes, any country of origin will do fine. Just search the interweb for (operating rod) and (operating spring)

Well that answers a question I've always wondered about: Will the SKS work as a gas impingement?

Anyway, check Sarco, Numrich or ebay.

wow, I'm sorry but this sounds like something that should have been noticed and avoided as soon as your bud got the rifle home.
i don't think i would fire any used firearm without a disassemble and inspection for safety reasons.

Some might not agree with this but, I always fire the first shot of a new to me rifle from the hip! Of course I have already stripped, cleaned and oiled it. The one thing I do need to learn is how to check the headspace that folks are mentioning quite often.

I do exactly the same thing the first time I shoot a 'new to me', old gun. I also do it on a new AK build. I had rather loose a hand than a face.

I had the same problem the piston stuck back and I could not get the handguard off. I took some carpet and wrapped it around a board and banged the muzzle and it freed it up enough to get the handguard off. The gas tube was very dirty and the piston would not even move in it. After polishing the inside of the tube it works 100%

Thanks for all the answers. I remember that the gunsmith had the same trouble getting
the handguard removed. Once in a while that's a problem with getting an item from
the internet where you can't check it out - until later.

Try Omega weapons systems,
http://www.omega-weapons-systems.com/sks.html
they should have what you need.
The parts you want are a piston extension and piston extension spring.

Do a search for sks parts there's plenty of parts out there.

One of my allies had a chewed up gas piston/rod. I think I installed a new Chinese piston/rod it was the same in length.

That is something that should have been discovered when doing the first cleaning. I never fire a "new to me" gun until after a complete disassembly, and cleaning.

Firing from the hip sounds like a bad idea to me for the following reason:
Should you have a catastrophic failure, in most cases the shrapnel will go up and out to side. If you are holding the rifle low, there is more chance for serious upper body and head injury. By holding the rifle normally, you may receive wounds to the hands and arms, but in most cases the receiver will protect your head. I usually wear heavy gloves on the initial shooting of any used firearm just in case it decides to go kaboom!

If you are unsure of a gun's safety. Lock it down in a weighted bench rest or vise and use a string from well behind the gun on the first round.

With an SKS, I load one round and fire. If all goes as it should, I will then load two rounds and fire. If that goes well, then I will load a five rounds(controllable if it should begin slamfiring). Only after these tests will I fill the magazine.
