Pull knife for detail leather cutting.
« on: January 06, 2018, 09:58:02 PM »
Needed a knife to cut tight radius in 10-12 oz leather.
Didn't want to spend a lot and didn't want to use up a bunch of 01 to make one.
Soooo, started looking at some small scraps of tool steel I had laying around.
Used cheaper materials for the major parts (the holder) and used the scraps for "inserts" that
are held in place with 2 roll pins so can be replaced if broken or worn out.
Good control too with the thin blades.

One 7/16" dia. soft bolt. (offhand grinder to shape, hacksaw & file to slot for insert, drill 1/8" holes (2)).
4" of pine 2x2 (turned in the lathe, sandpapered, drilled & tapped for bolt).
Amber shellac (leftover from SKS projects).
1/8" roll pins (sitting in the tool box since before time began(2)).
 :)

My straight blade always made the tight curve cuts look "choppy".

Ever think about a home made swivel?

Ah, okay, had to look it up.

no I haven't tried one of those yet.
In fact, the reason I made this one the way I did was so I could keep the blade perpendicular to the table.
Most of what I do with leather demands square edges.

The swivel looks interesting though but for heavy leather, I would think I would have trouble keeping it square.

After further research, I see that swivel knives are primarily for leather carving.
I never have had an interest in leather carving. Probably why I didn't know about them.
The pull knife is for cutting various shapes of heavy leather, knife sheaths, carry holsters, etc.

Thanks man!

Not your usual 'blade' that you would think of for this forum but it did originate from making sheaths for knive that I made for Christmas presents. :)
The leather cuts required shorter radius on sheaths so I started looking for something with a 'hook'.
Couldn't believe the prices asked and I just don't do enough of this kind of work to spend that amount of money.

Made all of my leather tools since starting this.
Stitch groover, diamond awl, stitch pony, fold groover, edge beveler, stitch prick marker,
guess I had more time than money. haha
Guess I should have mentioned leather stitching is new territory for me.
So far I'm a better machinist than a leather guy that's for sure.
