I could see where it would not tighten/time if the plunger was proud.

I don't think I'll damage the plunger if I take some material off the tip so that the plunger is no longer proud.  I'm thinking then the adapter will tighten,  As to whether the brake itself will tighten is still up in the air.  However, I can compare against the brakes on my AK74s to get some additional insight.

Finished my work on the muzzle attachments:

1) I removed some material off the tip of the plunger, such that it's no longer "proud" when fully depressed.

2) I timed the thread adapter by taking a few thousandths off the back side using my lathe.  It had detents every 90 degrees, so I didn't take very much material.  I used a locking pliers to tighten it into place.

3) I timed the brake using my lathe.  It tightened up about 1/4 turn past the detent, so it required more than a few thousandths of material removed.  The last few passes were only about 0.002" per pass.  Now the detent locks into the plunger when hand tightened into place -- hand tightened, not finger tightened.  If my math is correct, I assume I took about 0.030" of the rear of the brake.

4) The brake's bore was about 0.330".  That only gives it about twenty thousandths clearance for the bullet.  I opened it up to about 0.0340" to provide a little more clearance.

By the time I got done, It was too late to head to the range.  Planning on next weekend.  Since the rifle was sighted in and getting good groups without the brake and I didn't remove the red dot for cleaning, I expect no adjustments to be required.  If there are, I will consider this project to be a fail and go back to my slant brake.

Just got back from the range.  Way better, but still not perfect.  It shoots about a foot to the right with the brake on.  After getting back, I bored it out another 0.010".  I'll see how it goes next time out.

Just got back from another range trip.  It's now hitting the same place with the brake on or off.  Total bore through the brake is 0.350", or about 0.040" larger than the barrel.

Hurray for me!
