Sorry, but I cringe when I see perfectly good parts being butchered, especially when the objective is to "improve" on an already perfect design with a long history of reliability.

If you want an AR, build an AR! Please, stop destroying perfectly good SKS parts.

Keep in mind Nick, he is in Canada where SKSs are still imported and a dime a dozen. Well, they do cost more than that, but they are plentiful.

Cringe away, it's your right to freedom of expression!

I disagree with you that the SKS is perfect, though. Obviously, that's why I'm adding the features that I think it lacks.
Speaking of features, if I wanted an AR, then why did I design upgrades to the SKS like an ambidextrous bolt catch release, or a charging handle in a useful and intuitive location?

I love the SKS the way it is, but it's ultimately your rifle and subject to your liking.  Your mods look interesting.

I'll agree that the SKS is not "perfect" but I think it's perfect for what it was trying to accomplish.  That being said, it would be nice if it had detachable mags, or a good mounting point for optics, or a more integral safety.  I've also never been that happy about the way you have to detach the gas tube to clean out the piston and the separate operating rod.  Still, there's a measure of beauty for the time period it was created in.

I am the one they call Cesar.

I applaud Mcleod for enjoying a hobby that is something most are not willing to get into simply because alot of folks just dont do wrenches to any kind of extensive off the beaten path work. The SKS served its military roll well in its extensive history but it is a dated design by todays standards of disassembly in the field. My idea of a more modern SKS was my VZ58 mag-ed unit that is all push button take down with the proven FAL FCG. The only better upgrade I could think of is a modular alloy lower that I never got around to milling out. The goal would be to see how light an SKS can be made in modern configuration. Maybe some day......

Mag swaps on an SKS are cumbersome at best, even when modified to accept AK mags. Might be fun and look cool, but when carrying ammo on strippers, loading is faster and easier with the original box mag.

Playing with a gun that is in poor condition is not off the table for me, and I admit to doing a few mods from time to time. Most were necessitated by lack of parts availability, or otherwise unrepairable damage. Never found a reason to modify any surplus toy that was in good condition with matching numbers.

And if you are in Canada, isn't there a 5 round limit on magazine capacity?! This makes the modification even less practical, IMO.

Lets make an already heavy rifle weigh even more! Lets make it necessary to carry loaded magazines so movement is more restricted and requires more energy!

You are certainly free to do whatever is lawful to your toys. Just looks like Bubba had a hand in it, to me.

Dropping the mic, eh!

Kinda cool. Plain to see you have put a lot of work into that weapon.

Funny you should mention that... But there is in fact just such a project in the works that I am aware of (although not involved with directly, at this stage)

I really enjoyed your YouTube video.  You seem very handy with common hand/power tools; just the kind I use as well.

I just finished watching your video. Very interesting and creative. Dude I can really sympathise about about burnt up firearms, I had a barn fire awhile back that was so hot that it completely burned the wooden stocks off my SKS's. It also destroyed my workshop and all my tools. I ended up repuposing a toolshed temporarily as a work room. Anyway I would love to shoot one of your SKS-15-17's but I live in South Western Ohio. Keep up the creative processes and enjoy yourself.

Did you consider attaching the charging handle to the left side of the bolt carrier instead of creating a complicated left charging handle?
For example:
