Make a Yugo 59/66 gas tube from Chinese?
« on: September 30, 2022, 08:29:56 PM »
I have a Yugo M59/66 that needs a gas tube and I can't find any for sale. So I was thinking about making one.

But I am unsure if it is possible to make one from a Chinese or Tapco gas tube. I imagine either flaring out the front to fit over the Yugo gas valve, or adding material (or another tube) over the tube to go over the valve. But I also don't know what the front inside of a Yugo tube looks like.

So anyway, any ideas would be appreciated.

Any of the other gas tubes will work. The only difference on the Yugo is the tube has a larger OD where it slips onto the gas block. This larger OD is only about .175 long and then the tube is the same OD as most any of them. I would suggest looking for a tapco tube since the huge problem with surp tubes are most will be found with so much pitting in the bore that they no longer will give you a good gas seal and fail to eject is the result. A tapco tube is less likely to have been fired with corrosive stuff and not cleaned.

So the inner diameter of the Yugo 59/66 tube is the same the whole way to the front? (Of course ignoring the back.) In effect the wider end is for safety or something.
I thought the Yugo 59/66 tube was slightly longer than other ones as well?

According to here the Yugo 59 66 are longer than regular by a tenth of an inch, which I think would be too much. Of course there is considerable variation in tubes. https://www.yooperj.com/SKS-8.htm
However if somehow it will work that would make it very easy for me.

I have a number of Chinese tubes and they fit on any of my Yugo's. Yes they are a tad shorter but it makes no difference as long as the piston and bore have good surfaces that mate well. The rear sight should hold the gas tube "slack" out once locked in. Obviously, you would want a Yugo over a Yugo but a "good" China one will work in the mean time.  All tho, tapcos needed some filing to get them to lock in and a used one may need to have a dab of weld put on and recut since most "fitters" would grind the P**s out of the lock surface and make them loose. Its a gamble any way you look at it.

FWIW, I have the NC Star gas tube with the pic rail on top. It fits my Norinco nicely and at least one of my Yugos really snug.

I know this topic has not been responded to for awhile. But with regard to Yugo gas tubes I have NOS ( New Old Stock for newbies ) unissued Yugo gas tubes.
