My (Very) Basic Solar Setup
« on: November 05, 2025, 01:39:19 PM »
Last Fall I put in a two car garage so that I would have some more storage space and room to park the spare vehicle.
It's turned out real well, whichever car I'm not driving gets to stay there as well as the log splitter, sprayer and some other stuff.
The only drawback has been the lack of electricity.
It was going to cost a little more than I wanted to spend to trench a line and lay wire. I started pricing solar and it wasn't all that expensive for what I needed.
The plan was to just put a few lights in but, I started testing this rig and I think it will support a garage door opener.

The panels are two 100 watt panels. I sat it on a 4 x 4 that's in 5' deep and cemented.

I made the base myself out of scrap from the shop. It's built to rotate.

The charge controller. Right there it's showing 14.5 volts in the battery, which is a 100 amp hour Lithium Ion unit.

The rest of the controls. The inverter is a 1100 watt Pure Sine Wave that has a couple 110 outlets and a hardwire feature that will let me connect a small circuit breaker box.

I still have some work to do tying up loose wires and such but so far, I'm pretty happy with what it's capable of doing.
And best of all, no electric bill.

I have been wanting to install Solar on my house for some time now. I even have a DIY Solar website link on my browser toolbar. Well done thresher

Thanks GG. This install was really easy because I bought the whole system as a kit.
It basically had everything I needed except the brackets that the panels rest on. Those I was able to easily source.
The wiring was easy, all the connectors were already on and you can't hardly mess up the connections.
Also, I had done a lot of reading before I bought the system.
And I talked to some Amish folks that use solar. They were a good reference.

fun project.  My solar depth so far is a couple of lights off amazon that have their own little 3x4 solar panels to charge.  I have one on my porch flag, one in my garage.  I have thought about putting one as an interior light in my storage shed but the way these work they are off during daylight and on all night. Not sure I need a light on in my shed all night....
