I just lucked out and got a 53 Izzy that by all appearances is non re furbed but has a bad case of shellac dandruff and a few nicks..posted in Russians- I plan on trying to wipe it with alcohol first to smooth it out and maybe even out and cover spots then if necessary use a less than 1 lb cut of garnet shellac to enhance and further cover boo boos with a light steel wool and maybe paste wax finish. I have to leave all stamps in the stock and they are light so it's going to be stinker and never a raving beauty but it will be much cleaner and even with the nicks--retain it's value and beauty--I hope

I use a water based, non toxic stripper. I am also impatient and could not sit and scrape. I brush it on then come back after an hour and wipe off the softened shellac.
When the SHTF you better already have it at hand, because it won't be on the shelves when you get to the Wal-Mart land.
