TAPCO SKS Mag without Duckbill
« on: September 21, 2009, 03:13:32 PM »
If you could mount an adapter in your SKS so that you could saw off the duckbill from a TAPCO magazine and have it work just like an AK magazine, what would it be worth to you?   Such a device has been invented, I've seen it and it works, but it's not going to be made and marketed if it can't be sold at a profit.  The inventor prefers that they be made out of billet aluminum as shown below because they will last forever, but if costs prohibit using aluminum they could be made out of composite materials similar to the TAPCO magazines and stocks.

After the modification your SKS magazines would be similar in size and shape to a standard AK mag and could be carried in any AK magazine pouch.

So, how much would you pay for the modification device?  It would come with complete instructions for installation and for magazine modifications.

Do you want discussion on this or just an answer to your question?
i.e. What would you pay?

Not interested either. Sounds like something people may be interested in though.

It may be more marketable if the Tapco's could be bought already modified.

Need more info. How does the block attach to the SKS? Is it an easy adaption?

Thats why I asked my question above.

Just an answer to the original question or discussion of it?

Depends on how well it worked.

If you are only able to cut off Tapco 20's I'd be willing to drop about 35-40 bucks on it, as you have to ruin a 15 dollar piece of equipment that can only be used with one mod.

If there ends up being an aftermarket mag or you are able to use AK mags. I'd be willing to drop 60-70 bucks on one.

I wondered how long it would be before someone did this...I have thought about trying to modify one myself just too many other things going on.   I would be interested in something like that for a reasonable price.   It certainly brings the desired features of a detachable magazine rifle into play.   Meaning you still get the last round hold open and with a modified bolt you insert and remove mags with th bolt closed.   It makes perfect sense to me.    I had a little different method for doing it but I see no reason this method won't work as well or better.

Not interested. I'm long since done trying to turn a SKS into an AK.

I'm up for discussion. I'd be interested. How does it mount? How long does it take to mount it? How HARD it is to mount, i.e., what types of tools are necessary? How long does it take to do the mod to your Tapco mags? I presume, if you can do it to a 20 you can do it to any other size Tapco. Is the bolt mod required? Can it be mounted in an original wooden stock? I'm sure there are other Q's. Marcus

I see two screws that appear to be holding the adapter block to the stock...I would presume the existing mag attachment point is also utilized for three points of contact.   ???

Guys, you can keep asking questions and if all of them are answered anyone would be able to figure out how to make one of these.  It took 18 months to complete the prototypes and a LOT of work.  The inventor is, obviously, going to hold much close to the vest.  I will answer a few questions and that's it.

1.  The average SKS owner will be able to install it.
2.  Two holes, similar to the ones in the "M" and "D" models must be drilled in the stock.
3.  The magazine mod is extremely easy and can be done with hand tools.
4.  AK magazines are wider than the SKS receiver.  To work with AK magazines ANY mod would require modifications to the receiver.  NOT a good idea.

That's all the information that I can release to you.  The only other thing I can tell you is that I have see it and it appears that it will be 100% reliable and if made from aluminum will last the life of the rifle.

Incidentally, if you don't want to modify your stock at all, and some of us don't, you could easily get one of the "cheapo" stocks and make it your 922r compliant system.

Wasn't there a company in the past that already did this, and didn't the product disappear when it came to buying "their" mags because everyone bitched that they cost too much.
