Where to get plain dust cover
« on: August 07, 2024, 06:28:35 AM »
Just picked up a nice little SKS-M with a pretty nice thumbhole stock online. It came with an aftermarket dust cover/scope mount. Can?t use the irons with this mount. Anyone know where I can get a plain dust cover that isn?t as costly as a monthly car payment (eBay and gunbroker)? Thanks.

Good luck man.  Those have become as rare as hen's teeth as they say.  I had several receivers and parts that I finally tried putting together last year and realized I'd sold all or most of my scope mount covers and didn't have any covers to complete the rifles.  I then went on a spree trying to pick them up whenever I found them.  I managed to get two of the ones with the mount removed from the cover so all that's left are the four little screws that press on the sides, and I got one see-through cover that I can use.  I have a couple of non-see through ones that I may try removing the scope mounts from once I get my drill press back up and running.

Just about the only luck I had was a few weeks ago at a gun show I found one guy selling a plain cover for $15 which I immediately snapped up.  I guess my advice is to go to gun shows, and look carefully through the used parts lots.  I'd recommend that anyway as it's where I've found the most bargains.  It also pays if you know what to look for - last month I got 2 NOS Cobray pouches for $10 each and turned around and sold them on another forum for $180.

Hopefully this problem has been solved already, but yeah.  I've been looking around for a couple of spare parts lately only to find that many bastions of SKS surplus now is dry and what's left is way more expensive than I'm willing to spend.

Dust covers are still out there but they seem to be mostly on second hand sites like eBay or Gunbroker or Armslist.  As stated above, gunshows are probably OK places to look for them as well and if you're real lucky you may even find one someone will trade you for instead of outright purchase.

If you don't ever want to actually use the scope mount on the one you have, you can probably also modify that one to suit your need in a pinch but might be better to have a good second one in hand before you bust out the grinder.

Good luck!

They used to be fore sale on eBay, etc. all the time.  Some were used, and some were NOS without serial numbers.  I used to purchase the later -- better that mismatched numbers . . .
