You are right on all counts.

I agree and that's what I have been saying too.  J&G as well as Classic Arms were very clear that theirs were sniper clones built to the same 'specs' (not really, but that's what they were saying) as the authentic snipers.  SOG doesn't say anywhere on their site description that theirs are clones.  The wording is very misleading and calls it a sniper rifle several times... never once saying a repro.  Even the scope is implied it's period authentic- "comes with original PU 3.5 sniper scope with certificate".  As I said several times, I specifically asked them if this was a repro/clone or a real WWII sniper and I was told it was a real sniper.  Like AKBLUE said, I should have asked here first, but you know what?  We really shouldn't have to ask.  I'm not saying that's a bad idea and from now on I will be asking here first, but the thing is we shouldn't have to do that.  If a company advertises something and then tells you on the phone it is real... that should be good enough if it is a reputable company.

SOG came highly recommended, and I am waiting to hear back from them about this.  Right now I am giving the extreme benefit of the doubt by holding out that this was poor wording on the part of whoever wrote the description, and then lack of product knowledge on the part of the sales staff.  However I will add that when I asked about the 'sniper' and showed an interest, the girl told me it was 'real' and then told me it was onsale and the sale was ending that day...  She definitely hooked me!  In my defense though, if this was the real deal... I think anyone on this forum would have jumped on an authentic Nagant sniper for $365!

Again though...  if you specifically ask them if it's authentic and they tell you it is, why should anyone think otherwise?  Unless the company has a bad reputation, but SOG came highly recommended by several people.

if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. an authentic scoped ww2 mosin sniper for less than $800 is too good to be true.

but SOG should have told you it was a reproduction.

Chip Hazard:
Again I totally agree...  and it did sound too good to be true, which is why I asked, and they told me it was the real deal.

I just got off the phone with them and they admitted they thought these were authentic WWII 91/30 snipers because that's what they were told when they bought them.  So the girl working the phone said what she was told.

As far as price, I even said this to the owner who agreed with me...  Yes the price seemed low for an authentic sniper, but ya know... with the economy the way it is today you never know... The price could have been dropped because they weren't selling.  Unlikely, but she agreed that was very plausible.  Add to that the wording of the ad description and the sales staff said it was authentic, and why wouldn't anyone snatch up what was supposed to be an authentic WWII Nagant sniper with an authentic scope?

They are rewriting the online ad description and she offered to have UPS pick up the rifle and ship it back at no cost and refund my money, or she offered a small credit towards my next purchase.  She apologized and sounded sincere.  Seeing it is a nice gun, I took the credit and kept the gun.  I just let her know if I had known it was a reproduction I probably would have bought it later and purchased one of the other items on my wish list that may be drying up instead.

In the end they made things right and explained the mix up and took responsibility for the blame.  Even though they were told these were authentic, they still should have inspected them and verified them when they got them and before they listed them on their site-  That was their responsibility.  So guys...  yes this ended up being a repro, but they honestly thought they were authentic.  That means there could have been a small (very small) possibility of a batch of authentic WWII 91/30 sniper rifles for under $400!  In other words they actually thought they were real and still priced them at $379...

Now for some good news-  They have a batch of Yugo SKS's coming in but she couldn't tell me when.  I have 3 reserved for me.  At least I don't need to ask on here if those are real!

 I am glad it all came out OK, and that they made it right, and admitted their error;

 They have always been pretty good to deal with for me,  and it's nice to know they are willing to keep their word and that they are decent about customer service when there is a problem.

Old Outlaw:
Chip. Hope you do ok on the yugo's. At this late date of importation I would not expect too much.
