What to shoot and what not to shoot in the CZ-82
« on: May 13, 2012, 10:46:24 AM »
So I believe i seen Ranger say something about not shooting lead bullets in the CZ-82. So what Common ammo that you see on most websites should I stay away from and what ammo is good to shoot out of these pistols. I have heard the Hornady defense rounds are good. But for cheap I can get silver bear and other bulk stuff....is this type of ammo bad for the pistol? Just a list of good and a list of bad would be nice to have as a reference when I purchase ammo in the future.

Also i heard that i Think that i need to clean these polygonal barrels with a nylon brush or something like that, and not to use a brass brush or something. Will someone please clarify that just to be safe when I get my cz 82 in.

Any of the imported steel case stuff is what the pistol was designed to shoot so you will be fine with that for plinking. It has been reported that the Silver Bear HP does not frag out very well so does not make the best defense round as far as maximum effect goes.(I used it anyway when I carried a Makarov, but never shot anyone so can't confirm that )
Hornady does make an HP in their Custom line but have not seen any in their critical defense line. The custom is supposed to be good stuff though.

Any of the commercially available rounds out there are jacketed and will work fine; I have had good luck with Silver Bear, and the LVE ammo is the best I have seen so far, very good, very hot, and exactly what the guns were made to shoot; I have used the wolf and the Brown Bear as well, and while both functioned well, they were really dirty.

For defensive carry, the Hornady stuff is good; they are using their "xtp" bullet for it, and it's a good round. 8)

What is the problem with cast lead bullets?

They gum up the rifling in pistols that use polygonal rifling ; not right away, but after a while.

Theoretically, after a enough rounds, you will end up with a smoothbore, and maybe even an obstruction.

Never had problems with that. Jericho 941, CZ75, CPX-1. Maybe due to the cleaning I maintained?

awesome fast responses...I cant wait to get my CZ-82 in...it should be a fun gun to shoot and for the money seems like one of the best deals for a pistol.....I may even have to splurge for a CZ-75 too when I can scrape together the money for one....

I think mostly has to do with the fact that the CZ-82 has the polygonal(micro) rifling so the lead affects it differently than it would a standard type rifled barrel. cast lead bullets don't work that great in the Marlin Micro rifled barrels on the .22 rifles either.

There's more than one school of thought on this subject.
If you use them in a GLock for instance, you'll void your warranty.

The Jericho, CZ75 and CPX-1 all have polygonal barrels, also, which was why I was asking. I've never had a problem with cast lead through either of them.

Yet, WD. As previously stated. It's over time. Be careful of pressure build up in a polygonal!
Ammo- What would you be saying if they were refusing to sell at all? That they are hoarding and not sharing?Sounds like Obama talk to me; we cant have "ammo inequality" lets take from the 1% of people with the most ammo and redistribute it to the 99%

I shot quiet a few cast lead bullets through a CZ-82 never had any issue.  Shooting cast lead bullet in polygon bores isn't all that hard you just have to apply the same principles as you do when shooting cast lead bullets in non polygon bores.

Bullet to bore fit, correct BHN hardness to match load pressure and velocity and a good lube goes a long way to success.  Some poly bores are better at handling cast lead bullets than others,if you do get some minor smearing in the poly bore it much easier to get out of those than a standard rifle barrel but if you do thing right you want get leading in either.

There was company here in the U.S. that was changing the barrels before they sold them.So there are some CZ 82'2 with  the old style rifling..

I hand load Missouri 93 grain hard cast for my CZ-82 with no problems. The trick is to load them light. After 25 or so rounds or so you should break down the slide and inspect the barrel. I usually shoot 50 in a range trip and inspect. Then shoot a couple XTP through after a good brass brushing.
