Did They Dip Stocks in Shellac?

(1/2) > >>

I ran across a nice numbers matching Romy that was still packed in cosmoline. Metal cleans up beautiful, but when I got to the stock to wipe off the cosmoline, it wouldn't budge.
It isn't cosmoline, but a very thick hard finish of shellac. It is so thick, I was wondering how it was applied.
I'm including pics to try and show what I am talking about. It shows up really well under the buttplate.
I have never run across this before.

 Anybody seen this before?
 Thanks avery

You mean you can't see how thick this stuff is?  :?

Aye Kay:
  Probably hardened up cosmoline.

Well it completely resists mineral spirits and acetone. Hot mid-day sun does nothing to it.
I've dealt with dryed cosmoline before, unless they used something other than normal cosmo?

If you look at the stuff under the buttplate, it is clear. You can see the wood underneath.

Guess it's time to see if the denatured alcohol will soften it.

Definitely is shellac, the D.A. cuts right through it.  avery
