AMD-65 Pros and cons
Duke_O_NY808:
First off my SKS is my baby. That being said, I'm fixing to buy another x39 as a backup or "truck gun" for lack of a better term. With the ol' Yugo i can hit a 6" gong at 435m with iron sights so I think i have a grasp on the accuracy portion. I like the shortness of the amd-65 seeing its the shortest legal AK I can own here in HI. Read a lot of posts here but they are so scattered about personal feelings.
Anyone shed some light on the rifle and its workings as a weapon. Also with the UTG quad rail system, how hard is field stripping? I am not very familiar with the AK platform because I don't own one yet. I felt like the AMD-65 would fill the need well, just wondering about workmanship and quality that thereof.

Fieldstripping an AK is as easy as it gets.
I have an AMD and it is a fun reliable gun. The folding stock is sturdy. Lacks good cheekweld but is still workable. The much shorter sight radius doesn't make as good of a sight picture as a 20'' barrel SKS. But accuracy at 100 yards is still good. At least typical AK. And you might have read about this but the noise and muzzle flash is EPIC. 8) It would make a great truck gun and I keep mine in a surplus M60 barrel bag.
The only cons I can see in it is.
Part compatability. If you don't like the folding stock you can't swap it out.
The paint finish on the FEGs aren't very great.
Really no need of a 12.5" barrel with a welded on extension. If you are not going to go taxstamp on it might be better to get a folding AK with a 16" barrel. Though the noise and muzzle flash is epic.
I would love to SBR mine and take off the welded extenion but I have more important things that need to come first. Getting a CHL is number one.

Plus +
The AMD 65's available now that are FEG have original chromelined barrels.
They are well built and are all original except the US parts
They are unique among AK's for looks and the function well
The dual grips are nice for handling if you like that posture
Minus -
The AMD does not take kindly to furniture swaps of the buttstock at all except one Krebs attachment or front end without some mods.
Thery are loud with lateral blast from the unique brake
There might be some mag wobble as they are designed (opened up) for US mags vs euro mags
The quadrail thing you ask about., I dunno., but it may impede quick field strip for cleaning the gas system., dunno there and others will maybe chime in on that set up.
All-in-all a well thought of AKM variant, Centerfire seems to have the best price etc.,and three of the 20 round mags with pouch deal.

Centerfire totally made me start this lol. Any thoughts on the drum function? Bayonet?
vz2452:
No bayo lug.
Drum mag should work. Ihave a drum but haven't tried it. Metal mags that Ive tried wobble quiet a bit in mine front to back and side by side. Haven't shot it with metal mags, but with Tapco mags it works fine and fit tight. I had to file the Tapcos to get them to fit.
From what I have read the Tapco mags on the FEG AMDs are 922r compliance parts. So using euro surplus mags brings it out of compliance. But since you plan to pu a rail on it you can just add some more US parts on it.
Another con about mine is it doesn't have a rear sling swivel. I really need to fix that.
