Ammo at local Wal-mart(semi-rant)
« on: June 10, 2012, 09:44:20 PM »
Got a call from my buddy at the local Supercenter that they had .223 back in stock(finally).  Hopped in the car, and booked it over.  He called me about 4PM my time, as soon as he had it in his hand.  I got there about 5PM due to the ATM deciding it didn't like me.  In that hour, the counter was wrapped up.  They had:

3 420 round cans of Federal Lake City 62gr M855
5 100 round boxes of Federal Bulk 55gr
50 boxes of Federal American Eagle 55gr
10 boxes Hornady 55gr Zombie-max

The 3 cans went first to ONE man.  Another got the 5 bulk packs.  Zombie-max went next between 2 people.  I looked at him, and flashed "10" on the Am Eagle.  Pizzed one guy off, because he wanted it all, but the SG Manager limited each person to 200 rounds on the American Eagle(10 boxes).  I beat it over to the other Wal-mart, and they only got 500 rounds of Am Eagle, so it was a 3 box limit per customer.  Got 3 more, and had the wife get 3 on her card.  It all went in the can.  She is getting her disability re-evaluated, and hoping that comes through next month.  If it does, we are looking at a 6 month back-pay check, and she's already said I get that for ammo.

Until now, she thought I was joking about ammo.  When a fist fight almost erupted over 200 rounds, her eyes were opened.  Local shop is around $1 more than Wal-mart per box, but they keep the shelves stocked.  They also give me the hook-up when I volunteer on Saturdays/evenings.  Looks like they will be seeing me more.

ours never has bulk ammo....but today I spied a Sig 556 in the case for sale for $917.  When did wally world start selling sig AR-style rifles?  It was black with olivedrab handguards and stock.

Bud told me only select stores were getting the bulk cans, and that's when distribution decides to order/send them.  My Wal-mart started carrying ARs last fall.  They have a DPMS Oracle and a Bushmaster in the rack right now, $746 and $996 respectively.  Bushy has the FF hand guard and a $100 off coupon for an EOTech.  DPMS is the basic Oracle.

I forgot to add her reaction in the OP:

Her:  "All this over a few rounds of ammo?  People are getting insane."

Me:  "Wait until it's the last can of beans or bag of rice."

Her:  "What was the price per case again?"

Man your WalMarts are way cooler than any I've seen here in Ohio so far. I guess the outdoor stores are supposed to make up for that?

Local WalMarts here are usually a little higher than the "sale" price at the "sports" chains

The only bulk ammo I can get at a Wally World is trap loads for my shotgun and .22 but that's only in the 500+ rounds boxes. Fortunately Cabelas, Gander MTN, and Bass Pro carry bulks in other rounds.

I just ordered 600 rds of .223 American Eagle varmit tipped for one of my son's
prairie dog trip. $335 delivered to my door. Wasn't any limit either.
The lead SP was quite a bit cheaper and the FMJ even cheaper yet.
You should look into ordering bulk, you'd save some money.

Can you get ammo delivered to your house or do you have to have it sent through a FFL?
I found .40 s&w for $11 for a box of $50 (tulammo) the last box I bought was the winchester white box, it was 100 rounds for $42!

Why would you have ammo sent through an FFL?

Ammo is a direct mail order item, and a lot of us order thousands of rounds at a time.

The 3 wally worlds by me (West Georgia) carry either the American Eagle AR15 ammo or Remington .223. Usually just in the 20 round boxes. A buddy told me one of the W/W's had it in the bulk ammo cans. But was gone by the time I got around to going. Usually try to pick up a box or 2 every time I go in.

Ive just never ordered it online, ive always just looked for good deals at the gun shows or at the local sporting goods store.

Local legal issues, I thought online ammo sales in California had to go through FFLs now?
