And it should have exposed the holes in your current plan as well....such a seemingly small thing, a power outage, but look how much it disrupted things.

Use it as a drill, and make a list of things to improve on.

Back on the grid. It was an interesting  5 days. It did show me I am somewhat prepared for a SHTF senerio. :)

Good to hear brother.

The only hole I can think of was not having the gas stored for the genny. Luckily I did have a 55 gallon drum I was going to turn into a burning barrel to get fuel and also lucky a gas station had a genny to pump gas but it was a 20 mile round trip.. My Van with 30 gallon tank was filled the morning before it happened along with five gallons for my lawn mower.
I will now be getting a newer drum to fill and cycle the gas every three months by using it in my van then refilling the drum to keep it fresh.
I had food stored.  Water stored with a 350 gallon back up of rain water and 2000 gallons in the pool if needed.
Have Guns and lots of ammo to protect other items and hunt if need be.Fishing poll and gear.
Small garden growing for more food in the coming months.
Emergency lighting.
Extra medication and first aid kit.
Ice stored in chest freezer.
Emergency radio even though there was never any warning that the high winds were coming. The weather just said scattered T storms for the day.
All radio and TV stations went down when it happened, even the weather station.
I'm little PO but not surprised that there was no warning at all. One minute the Sky were clear and blue then they started to darken so I got out of the pool and went inside.
I had to go back out about 5 minutes later and when I did the screen door ripped out of my hands. Thats when I heard the trees snapping and the sky turned a greenish purple.
Then it hit and all hell broke lose.
The worst part is the financial hit it put on my already limited income. I spent over $200 bucks on gas. I do have 15 gallons left but will have to filter it well to use in my lawn mower and Subaru because the bottom of the drum I have had some hardened oil in it for when it was used for drain oil and some rust.
I was going to Pick up another Mosin Nagant at the local fun show but cant now :(

Glad to hear you got back on. We're still out. Called our power company, they have no clue when we will get back on. At first they said the power had been restored yesterday. I asked how that was possible when the lines are still laying in the road? Then it was, "It's scheduled for Friday". I talked to one of the line crews and the foreman said "That circuit ain't on the schedule". So I guess no one really knows. We have actually been lucky. We saved all our meat by taking it to our daughter's house (100 miles away) and didn't have any structural damage at the house. We have made the decision to forego a planned vacation and install a standby generator powered by Natural Gas. I've been doing the research on them and believe the standby is the way to go. You don't have to haul gas or keep it stored. You don't have to worry about getting out in the winter to get more fuel. It comes on automatically and it self-tests every week. Also, it starts up by itself, so if I'm not home my wife doesn't have to worry about trying to start up a generator. I'd rather avoid goin' thru this again, if possible.

On another note: Everybody slammed President Bush during Katrina because he didn't go to New Orleans to witness first-hand the destruction. There were just as many people out of power from the storms last Friday as from Katrina. Obama was in Ohio yesterday. Did he check out any storm damage? Did he stop by any of the cooling centers? Did he even fly over to see the downed electric lines and trees? Nope. He went to Maumee, which was pretty much un-affected by the storms, to make a CAMPAIGN SPEACH!

First, of after reading this I would like direct you to the spell check button...

Second, while true this was a big storm it was in no way on the scale of Katrina. The power being out does not measure the magnitude of a storm. This was not a light storm, but it does not have the same amount of shear destruction Katrina had. So to try and use this as an attack on the current president is just a poorly spelled waste of time...

Obama did not declare West Virginia a disaster area even though there was millions of dollars of damage here, so those who got hit hard are not eligible for federal loans to rebuild. I'm not saying we should get a hand out but we should  at least get federal loans.
Isn't picking on someones spelling a personal attack.

Have you considered changing your generator over to run on propane? Storing a few 100lb bottles of propane is much safer than 55 gallons of gas.

It wasn't Katrina, but if this magnitude of natural disaster had occurred in a state where the bulk of the population didn't despise Obama, a state where the Dem Gov and Senator hadn't just said they were not attending his NC convention, or in a state where Obama's primary opponent: a convicted Texas felon didn't receive 43% of the Democratic vote; then those  big black Canadian-made tour buses would be rolling through handing out BS and lollipops searching for a photo-op. This is likely just typical payback from team Obama. It's okay, the Mountain state will survive.

Thresher and his family have been without power for five days in near 100 degree heat, maybe you can cut him a little slack on the spell-nazi BS.

Yes I have considered doing that Because I have propane for back up heat and have a 500 gallon tank on site. Just don't have the bucks to get the part for the genny at this time.

Good that is the way to go. These folks are a WV company, I've bought from them. http://propane-generators.com/

Yeah because here in South Florida we don't know what storms are and have never gone with out power...

I was not making an attack on his spelling, just merely stating that spell check would help him or maybe a proof read. I have been sitting in a near 100 degree house with 5 dogs for the past 3 days because the AC exploded and it may not be fixed till Monday so the near 100 degree thing is not a good defense to use...

Also the correct term is Grammar Nazi not Spell-nazi...

Power came back on Friday night at 10:30 PM. Had to work all weekend at my 2nd job. I did get to relax last night, watch my own TV, sit in my own chair, and drink my own beer. Still a lot of people out of power around our county.
