Why The Tires On Trailer House Roofs?
« on: July 04, 2012, 09:27:52 PM »
Like the caption says: Why The Tires On Trailer House Roofs?
In our travels, especially in rural areas, my wife and I have noticed a lot of trailer homes have tires on the roof. Some are obviously metal roofs.
My wife asked me this question.

Seeing as how I am ignorant of all trailer park living - why do people do that? There must be a specific reason as home beautification can't be the idea. Obviously I've lived a sheltered life not to know.

Is there a pecking order in all of this? "Elmer sure is uppity now he has 14 tires on the roof and we ain't so lucky" or something...

Helps keep the roof from rattling as much in high winds.

It is called Red Neck Shot Put. What you do is you put your name on the tires ( the more the better) then put them on the roof and when the twister comes it picks up the tires and throws them. The person whose tire lands the farthest away wins...

Here in Ohio you can't do that anymore but back in the day alot of people did. I just  releveled the trailer with a slight arch to pull the roof tight but it doesnt last when your on Ohio clay and runner pads. Never could stand tires on my new trailer back in 91 but when it blows hard the roof sounds like thunder inside. Try sleeping with rumble rumble all night. The following year I had an insulated roof over done and that cured that. Also made it cooler with the white roof. Still beats an apartment complex especially on private land but our counties dont allow anything but doublewides on full foundations. everything else goes in the trailer courts.

Not only noisy it tends to make them leak eventually by working the seams of the metal.

I would have thought it was to prevent their theft. Mine had a metal roof and never had a rattling problem.

On the internet, you can be anything you want to be.
Yet it still amazes me that so many people choose to be stupid.
