California and "collectible" AK-47???
« on: August 29, 2012, 11:59:41 AM »
This is gonna sound really odd, but being I live in CA and AKs are frowned upon ... sooooooo

Has any one seen - GASP - an genuine vintage AK 47 that has been disabled so as to be made legal by it's permanent inability to fire, for curio reasons?
ie: Like a a section of the barrel filled / plugged with lead, but otherwise the real deal?

It pains me to ask as I feel really lame even putting the question out there, but think it would be cool to own an actual vintage AK.  Just the legal issues in a state like CA are enormous.

I hear they are thinking of starting a thing called a "reaping" by county to take our kids to some arena for a death match... oh wait, that was just a movie.

I have heard of deactivated war throphys coming back from Vietnam and some other wars.  They'd cost you though.

Cut-away versions of AK-47 and AKM variants sometimes come up for sale on the usual surplus sites. These are literally cut-away at several areas to reveal the internals for demonstration purposes.

Other than that, I can't think of any permanently disabled variants that make it into the US. It's somewhat popular to purchase such pieces in other countries. Here, usually nobody  would buy one unless it is a functional rifle.

Buy a Century Polish M1960 and play the bullet button game. This is about as close as you will get to a real milled AK-47 in California.

Bullet-button route a good idea.  I'll keep that in mind.  If I see a cut away display model, it just depends on how it's done ... A definite "maybe", but still an option.  Thx for input.

There are thousands of fully functional AK's in Califoirnia.  Active collectors and builders.  I see their weapons all the time.  A few more hoops to jump through but you can own the real deal.  Get on one of the Cali sights etc.  Cal guns or whatever.

I did some more research on this (I'm more of an SKS person), and I think I'm saving my money for a CA legal AK47!  Bullet-button solves it all as long as I only use 10rnd mags and it is at least 30" long  :)  I would love to find a bargain on one that I can tac out a bit...

My father in law is a Vietnam vet, they raided a gun cache in Nam and siezed a full case of mint AKs, he said he humped "his" AK for 3 months with him.  When he went to leave, they told him he would have to wait 2 weeks so they could lead the barrel before he could take it, he said f-that and said keep it, I'm outa here.
