Spare parts for an SKS
« on: February 21, 2013, 05:35:33 PM »
Hay all, checking another board I'm on and the topic of spare parts was up. My question is what spare parts should one get for my SKS's  and other guns?

I just received a extra firing pin , recoil spring, gas piston & extension rod. I'm sure there's more you could get but, I seriously don't think  I'll ever need any of them. Properly maintained they should outlast us.

I'm no expert but I would have to agree. I have a few SKS's and I wouldn't go looking for spare parts unless something broke on me. I think mine will probably out live me, they are built like tanks. And I think spare parts are pretty abundant, JMHO

If you have a Yugo 59/66, it wouldn't hurt to get an extra gas valve.

In the Armory:
"Nora" - Norinco Type-56
"Vesna" - Yugo M59/66A1
"Eva" aka the 'Evil Black Mistress' - Norinco para project gun (80% complete)
Marlin .22

The gas valve I should get. About the only thing that can go bad. Do have 2 Yugo's 59/66's

This comes up every now and then and the consensus is just pick up what is cheap and available. The SKS isn't known to eat up any particular parts so nothing jumps out to me except firing pins. Some ammo/rifle combination seem prone to popping primers and taking out the firing pin.
Other than that, maybe the small piston and spring as I can see one of those shooting off into no where if you have to take it apart in the field for whatever reason.

If you maintain your gun, any gun and lube it with moly it will never wearout.  I even put a tad of moly on the gas piston too.  Don't let nothing wearout before its time.  With the chrome lined bores the receiver and moving parts will wearout first and using moly the metal to metal touching parts should have the same life as the chrome lined bore does, pretty much equal now.

I keep inhouse for every gun;

1. firing pin and retaining pin
2. extractor & extractor spring
3. recoil spring
4. trigger/hammer springs
5. gas piston
6. Rear sight spring
7. rear sight

Its good to stock parts for everything were we can.  I have plenty of swede ljungman & hakim parts too. When the import of the saiga's stopped way back when i purchased complete rifles in 223 & in 308 as shooters and parts rifles it ever needed just incase they were never imported again.

I agree that there aren't many spare parts you'd really need.
There is a saying " It's only as good as it's weakest link".
So that would probably be "Springs" and even then they are pretty
tough. So if you really want to be safe get extra Springs.  :)
