North Vietnamese SKS
« on: October 19, 2013, 02:29:03 PM »
I need some information on what constitutes a North Vietnamese SKS.  A couple of years ago, I purchased an old Chinese Type 56 from 1959.  It has a 5 pointed star, with a "1" inside, on the right butt stock.  The information from Yooperj states that a 5 pointed star, with a 1 inside, on the receiver or other part is a North Vietnamese marking.

What say the knowledgeable SKS pros?

Terry, the serial number is 3201231 then to the right factory 26 inside Triangle.  All part numbers match, bottom sling, and stamped unto the front right butt stock is a prominent 5 pointed star with a "1" inside. My thoughts are that quite possibly, early in Vietnam war, North Vietnam received some Sks rifles from China, stamped them in their arsenal, and shipped them to Viet Cong in South Vietnam. Probably before North Vietnam started producing their own.
Thoughts?

No import marks, also has China early D sling at bottom. It's my guess that North Vietnam did not start producing their SKS until sometime in the early 60's, which would explain the SKS coming initially from China.

Started in 1962. I have the earliest number known at this time, serial number 620030. The last known is 655805.

The one you describe wouldn't be considered a NVA.

Now that I've read these posts and done further reading on the SKS role in Vietnam, there is little doubt that during this war, both China and Russia supported the North Vietnamese and the Viet Cong. Early on there is no doubt that Chinese gave the SKS to North Vietnam, and that I probably have an Sks that was run through North Vietnam's arsenal 1.  Later in the war the USAF destroyed this arsenal that produced the North Vietnamese SKS, and were using Chinese and Russian AK 47's.
As a Vietnam veteran, I'm happy to have this little piece of the SKS history.

Agreed, now that I know what a desk Luger is.

I have seen at least two different pics of the Star-1 on stocks before, on non-import marked early Type-56 Carbines.

I would definitely enjoy seeing another.
