Advice from the stock man...

Galahad -- I know you've hand-carved a stock or two.  I remember pictures of a project you had worked on.  And I know it's really a pain in the butt to do it, but is it something I might be able to take on?

I have this REALLY old shotgun -- Crescent Firearms 16 Ga. break-action.  The front handguard and butt stock need to be re-made on new wood.  Handguard has some long pilot holes lengthwise through it, and the buttstock has a long pilot hole as well.  I have a few pictures on the "Shotguns" sub-forum, but can make some more, just of the wood, if it's helpful.

What do you recommend?  Have you carved from a straight rectangular block, or do you do something like a Boyd's blank and start from there?  I know it's a HUGE undertaking, but I'm ready to spend as much time as it takes to make this thing nice again.  I want to pass it on to my son someday, as my father gave it to me, and his father gave to him...

It's not as hard as you think.  I used a block of Walnut, not too hard, not too soft.  Cut out the general shape with a jigsaw and used a HAND RASP to do the work.  Get a couple of new, good quality rasps and they will take the wood down much faster than you think they will.

As with anything to do with wook, it pays huge dividends to go slowly.  It also helps to remember that you can't "back up" if you chew off too much.

I guarantee that you can do it.  Slow and easy, patient work.  If you start to think you've got "almost" enough wood removed from one part then work on a different section.  The whole thing should be "roughed out" before you start to finish any part of it.

:D   Always one wiseass!!!  But "wook" is like a normal run-of-the-mill Chinese SKS that has seen duty in Iraq, nothing special except in the case of wook they have been handled by Chewbacca.  :P
