Accurizing a Sks; any suggestions?
« on: January 14, 2007, 04:41:56 AM »
I am always in search of good precision products for my sks that will improve accuracy. I do have all the original parts and can change it back but I have another to be the stock one. This is the most fun and cost effective rifle I own to modify. I was just wondering what parts really helped you to shrink your groups? So far I have found some that worked for me. fiber glass bedded Tapco T-6, Ricks Muzzle Break, Kivaari trigger job, a scope, buffertech recoil buffer, and the one that continues to baffle me is my Albanian bolt carrier (I think it is because it just fits better).

Some of these affect the rifle's legal status.

- Completely remove bayonet, lug, and forward sling mount.  Basically anything that touches the barrel you can dremel off, making the barrel harmonics more consistent.  You don't even want the cleaning rod rattling around underneath.
- Adding Techsights can improve practical accuracy, but don't make the weapon itself any more consistent.

I did all that, removal of all items contacting the barrel. I also spent $15.00 or so for a LimbSaver barrel deresonator. Money well spent.
I couldn't get this thing to write normal or cursive, so I didn't sign my name. I've been reading all these magazines too, but all they say is "Made In The USA, Counts As 3 Compliance Parts"

Buy an AR. If you can't afford one, buy a Mauser or Mosin. Just my .02

Yep. +1

If you don't expect less than 2 inch groups you won't be disappointed. There are a lot of "reports" out there of sub-moa sks's, although not impossible it's unlikely. If total accuracy is what your after than get something other than an sks, it'll save you both money and headache.

Yep, it's really a waste to try and make one accurate.  They are fun just like they are.

I already have an AR. I only like it because I can quickly change uppers and ammo. My super accuracy stuff is Savage 10fp as well as a weatherby mark v. I just want my sks to be as accurate as it can be. I know its not a sniper, and I am not expecting a magical bolt on that makes it super accurate. I was just wondering if there is any little tricks I can do to make it even better.

It shoots pretty good. I have a decomissioned stop sign my brother gave me that i like to shoot at. I put a pic of bin laden and use that to shoot at on it. I can hit the sign about 60% at 500 meters. I can hit it at better with an AR, but Its not reliable. I hate AR! I was watching shootout on the history channel and they showed a shootout with USMC and every one of their squad's M16s was jammed. I have one jam so bad it took a few hrs to get working again. they are a real pain!

I am now informed that I should look for a good threaded Chinese sks barrel. Aparently a Chinese Sks barrel assembly will fit fine, just gotta get a new gas tube to fit it. The thing they say is the chrome lined Chinese barrels without the extra stuff on them and the chrome lining improve accuracy on the milled sks reciever. It is even suppost to improve the reliability as there is no more gas valve issues. Anyone heard of this. Please keep in mind that I have multiple sks's and this is a mis matched one I got for <$100 that I enjoy working on.

a good chinese or russian barrel would be a step in accuracy I would guess, for the reasons you stated.  Also due to the chrome lining it would be in better shape anyway.  Since its a project gun, why not?
